After one night’s good rest, we started off with a great breakfast at the hotel. The hotel serves good food with a lot selection.

We started our exploration of Montreal after breakfast. Following suggestion by the hotel concierge staff, we walked down the classic tourist route(Rue Sainte-Catherine) toward old town.

IMG_4743.JPG

Part of the route was what we passed by yesterday. We got to Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal. These are the steps that people rest and hang out. Look at my husband, who laid on the ground just to catch the perfect moment for his photography.

When we passed by the hammock yesterday, we didn’t get chance to try it. Glad we did it today. It was very relaxing and fun. You can just put down all the curtains for privacy.

IMG_4765.JPG

Right after we turned into Rue Saint Urban road, we were attracted by the unique outside deco of the Rue Clark building. Isn’t it nice?

IMG_4781.JPG

China town was on the way to old town. As a Chinese, how could I not check it out?

IMG_4799.JPG

Here’s Parc Sun-Yat-Sen. We saw a group of local Chinese people hanging out in front of the building. Sun-Yat-Sen’s statue was donated by Guangdong Zhongshan government to China Town back in 2013. My husband and I went to Sun-Yat-Sen’s tomb in Nanjing in our last trip to China. I was excited to see his statue again.

IMG_4787.JPG

IMG_4789.JPG

When we were at the park, there was an old British couple. They were very interested in the history and wondered who Sun-Yat-Sen was. They were happy when they knew that I am a Chinese and know some histories and could help them out.

There are many Chinese stores in China Town as you can imagine. Tianjin Soup Dumpling is very famous in here as it’s in China.

IMG_4783.JPG

IMG_4790.JPG

These are two gates facing each other in China Town. In general, size of China Town in Montreal couldn’t compete with that of in San Francisco, New York or even Boston. But they’ve got what they got. A little bit of déjà vu.

IMG_4794.JPG

IMG_4796.JPG

Finally, we were in old town. I liked it right away as soon as I got there. All the buildings are very unique and magnificent. Along with bouquet stores. People can get lost in time here. Compared to downtown, I like old town better, for its history and construction.

Horse carriage in old town reminds me of New York.

We finally went to Basilique Notre-Dame De Montreal, which is the No. 2 largest church in North America. Notre-Dame in French means for lady as we were told by the guide. The church started in 1672. And had gone through few reno and rebuilt.

IMG_4831.JPG

Line of people waiting to get in. Entry fee is Canadian dollar $7 for adult, with or without guide. Cash only. They accept US$ but only give back Canadian$. I would suggest you to get some Canadian$ before you go.

In the most recent rebuilt, Montreal hired a famous architecture named James O’Donnell to design the interior construction back in 1824. All the inside materials are wood. It took 5 years to finish building. On its completion, the church was the largest in North America. But was taken over by New York after over 50 years. The interior is splendorous, all are gold leaf coated. Montreal people has all to be proud of this church.

On the 2nd floor, there is a 32-foot pipe organ that was completed in 1891. Amazing. On the right hand right, there is a surrounding stairway. In the past, there was no microphone, the pope had to stand on the 2nd floor so people could hear him.

In the attic, there is a 30-ton bell as we were told by the guide. It rarely rings. The church usually will ring it for national funeral, big holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. As explained by the guide, the bell is too big, every time it rings, it brings crack to the building. Not sure if she was joking or this is real.

The church still offers services like masses, wedding ceremony and funeral. As advised by the guide, the famous singer, Cyclin Dion had her wedding in this church, and she also held funeral for her late husband in the same church.

After around one hour’s tour in the church, we continued to walk around old town. We stopped by Place Jacques Cartier. There were a lot of artists at the square, offering quick figure sketches to tourists, and street musicians. It was around noon time, we decided to sit down and had quick lunch. It felt good to listen to the live music, watching people walking around and artists doodling, very relaxed.

This is a pizza place. Their pizza was pretty good. However, the Cesar salad wasn’t to my liking. There were only lettuces with very few thin slices of ham, and was very costly. Pizza is what I would highly recommended.

After lunch, we went to World Photo Expo. Few photos were really disturbing. It reminds us how lucky we are and what we have owned.

In general, it was really relaxing and a lot to see at old town. You can easily spend a full day here without realizing how time flies.

We went to a famous steakhouse for dinner, I was still not happy about the salad I had at lunch. I can’t let my day end like that.

Name of the restaurant is The Keg. A very famous steakhouse, they offer good seafood too. Even though it’s a little bit pricy, I love their quality and flavor, esp their cocktail. That was literally first time I finished up a glass of mojito by myself. My husband also said very high of their old fashion.

The steak was perfect, very favorable. If you are a beef fan, you may come try it yourself. I believe you will like it.
