Foods And Medications That Don't Mix
Certain foods and medications just don’t mix. Here are 5 combinations to watch out for:
1.
Kale is a nutrient powerhouse rich in vitamin K. But vitamin K reduces blood thinners’ anti-clotting effects. Other foods to avoid include broccoli, spinach, and Brussels sprouts.
2.
Drugs like Capoten, Vascotec, Prinivil, and Zestril raise potassium levels in the body. If mixed with potassium-rich foods, like bananas the combo could cause irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations.
3.
High-fiber foods prevent absorption of certain meds like: Levothoid, Levoxul, and Synthroid. A higher dose may be required for people on high-fiber diets.
4.
Grapefruit juice increases drug levels in the bloodstream. The result is a greater risk of side effects like leg pain. Also avoid grapefruit juice when taking some meds that treat: high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, anxiety.
5.
Black licorice contains a sweet-tasting component called glycyrrhizin. When glycyrrhizin mixes with digoxin it can cause irregular heartbeat, heart attack or death. Always read medication instructions carefully and consult a doctor about possible food interactions.
