We switch to having 1 car and we love it

in #blog7 years ago

My wife and I used to both drive separate vehicles. We stared work at the same time and got out at the same time. So we've always driven separately because, why get there so early, or stay late? Why be stuck with one vehicle if we both want to do different things?

Well, when we did have a major car repair come up, we went down to 1 vehicle because we looked at the cost of replacing the now basically retired car (would cost almost as much as it's worth to fix). At first this was a drastic change but by the end of the first week we were used to it. We left 15 minutes early and we got home 15 minutes later.

I did the math and we would save around $3,000 a year doing this. Between the differing gas cost of 2 people driving in the same direction and back, the insurance, and the maintenance. That's if we didn't take out a loan for the new car.

Everyone told me it would be awful having 1 car. But we learned to share better.
Everyone told me we would be in a rough spot if the vehicle needed repairs, we dropped it off and both took Lyft for a day.
Everyone told me why it wouldn't work.
But no one told me why it would work.
No one wanted to say that you'd save money.
No one said it'd be easier.
No one said it was possible to be just as happy.
No one said you wouldn't miss out on things without your own car.
Everyone said it was a bad idea.

But it worked and we are happier now.

I write this to share my experience with it in hopes that anyone who has considered this option but haven't tried it will give it a shot. We are happier and we save money.

Nice car!

We've ranged between 1-2 cars. Currently we each work 20-30 min from home in opposite directions, which seems to tilt the math towards 2 cars.

However, the tradeoffs that we made to have 1 car when we worked closer to home was well worth it.

Thanks for the perspective!
