Lets talk about decision making -- how to make decisions

in #life6 years ago

Decision making as we all probably know is an incredibly difficult and daunting task especially for those of us who are the analytical types.

Factually -- We less often have enough data or information required to make a guaranteed-to-be-right decision.

In most of the cases, the decisions we end up making are the educated guesses and that's really not comfortable. Rather it conotes that in order to get better at decision making, then you must embrace uncertainty. Yes, you must be comfortable with not knowing exactly the right decision not until after you might have made it. The true mark of a successful decision made isn’t the fact that you always make the right decision rather itsethat you make more decisions with a much greater confidence. As one individual mulls over a single decision for hours, days, weeks and even years, another individual has already made quite a similar decision and not just made but also acted on it. Then if it ends up being the wrong decision, such individual could then make a counter decision to fix it. But the other individual who fails to even make the decision but rather lets life “happen to them” would just be far behind even if they make a higher percentage of good decisions.

Come to think about it -- why do you think alot of successful persons were previously bankrupt? The most successful persons tend to have the most failures, also. It’s simply because successful individuals are also decision-makers, and that makes it even more likely the chances that they would choose wrongly at some point in time. Choosing wrong is almost always far better than not choosing at all. This happens to be the first and the most vital lesson on decision-making, as negative consequences from poor choices are rarely permanent.

That's the reason why this this article is subtitled How to Make Decisions and not How to Make Good Decisions. While the latter implies that the only decisions which is worth making are the right ones. But then, that requires crystal balls and a whole lot of other things which most of us really do not have access to. How then can we make decisions with confidence and greater frequency.

Reasonably one and probably the most helpful factor for making a decision is having a knowledge of the basis behind the decision. Once you know your basis, you would be able to make the decision and carry on with executing that decision. This is a skill which you can practice!
