A Rare Glimpse of Indian History, Through an Incredible Masterpiece Art

in #art5 years ago

History is full of surprises and conincidences. There are many things which are still un-discovered and those which are discovered have put people.and discoverer into a narrow lane of unknown unfolded events. Many Archaeologist are still working out to find the story, the truth behind those events.

While on a recent trip to a Musuem, I came across the main centre of attraction. A female sculpture absolutely beautiful with stunning figure. Lifeless but still shining enough as it get into life anytime. It is named as "Yakshi"

A yakshi is a female earth spirit, accepted as a symbol of fertility by the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain faiths. She is usually portrayed as a wide-hipped, voluptuous woman, who can cause a tree to bear fruit simply by touching it with her foot.

It is unique and outstanding example of Indian Art. This figure is considered to be dated back around 2000 to 2300 years ago during "Ashoka" reign. A rare glimpses of Mauryan Dynasty. Carved out of a single piece of sandstone, it was discovered in 1917 along the banks of River Ganga near Patna (India).
There was a interesting story too behind the discovery of this sculpture. As per the description on the sculpture at the Museum. It was discovered by Ghulam Rasul , a washerman and the stories goes like :

The sculpture is completely submerged in the riverbank mud. The underside of her base was supposedly been used by the villagers to wash cloth. Once chasing a snake that crawled inside the stone base, Ghulam Rasul, discovered this artistic sculpture.

The sculpture and so called "Yakshi" meets the standard of beauty as mentioned on Sanskrit and Pali Treaties. The statue is 5’2” tall and made up of Chunar sandstone with an incredible mirror-like polish. though it was half damaged, but still each portion defines the true beauty of Great Indian Art.

The sculpture face is so beautifully carved. Her skin fold are delicately made at the neck and at the waist. She is heavily adorned. She also holds a flywisk on her right shoulder.

Her figure is voluptuous with a full bust, slender at the waist and wide at the hips. More unusual but prescribed norms of beauty are incorporated as the griva trivali – the three fold lines on the neck and katyavali – folds of flesh at the waist. Perhaps, what is most striking about the statue, after one has absorbed the obviously attractive features, is the graceful manner in which the figure endears itself to us. The Yakshi stoops slightly forward instead of standing upright, seeking a posture of humility. The smile on her lips is elusive, yet hauntingly sweet. The design of her right leg is slightly bent as if due to the weight of the fly-whisk she holds and the firmness of her grip on the chauri, show the delicacy of rendition in detailing. It is a figure in the round, which means it can be viewed from all angles.

Source

Despite the damage left portion, the statue exudes a romance and magic of a time gone and is a breathtaking example of the superior level of craftsmanship thousands of years ago.

Who knows what is a sculpture to us, could be in real once. History has many secrets too.

Stay Calm....

@steemflow,

Fascinating. It boggles the imagination that such a piece could be created using the tools available more than two millennia ago. Most Westerners do not appreciate the depth and complexity of "Indian history" and it somehow always seems to get overshadowed by nearby "Chinese history."

I wonder if it is simply because "India," until more modern times, was not a "unified whole" like ancient China was for large parts of its past. Any thoughts?

Here's a thought that just popped into my head: Damascus Steel, the metal used to make the legendary Damascus Swords, actually originated in India. A prominent theory is that it was the metal's "contaminants" (specific to one particular mine) that were responsible for the swords' extraordinary properties. Once the ore in that mine was mined out, the manufacture of "Damascus Swords" seems to cease entirely.

Do you live anywhere near that mine? Undoubtedly, some of the ore is still present. Ancient Indian metal smiths were actually
very skilled. It would be INCREDIBLE to obtain anything made of such metal. More incredible still, to obtain a sword or knife made of such metal by local smiths. I wonder if such an industry exists today?

A lot of people would pay a lot of money to own such an object.

There's a potentially fascinating blog story in all this.

Now that would call for some more investigation.....one thing about Indian history that it don't get much notice is because of the colonial rules we were under...being ruled by many years all the stories about Indian history never came out.....like the Kohinoor which was originated in India.
I need to study more about Damascus ...to find out of his sword story...but where I live is full of many mineral resources including Uranium....and people here still use many axes and knifes ....now you have put in mind, I will see what else I can get about...

Namaste wonderful art sculpture, thank you. Amazing how the washer women were using the base to wash cloth in the river. The threefold lines on the neck I first heard of regarding Krishna - as a sign of attractiveness.

Yes that's true @julianhorack this is a marvelous masterpiece and need many appreciation. The craftsmanship is wonderful....that why she is referred as yakshi

I am imagining how the statue got submerged in the river. Could have been washed down the river, could be too heavy though to get carried away. Interesting story behind it's discovery who would know it was just there waiting.

Well that thought is valid, considering the stories about its finding. But as mentioned, the place is very near to Patliputra where king Ashoka use to rule, also it is the place where Buddhism originated . So with all possibilities it might have submerged after the Maurya Dynasty.....might be the snake came out just to signal out the existence of that Yakshi....who knows.....there are so many mystery behind every history

I was wondering to use NSFW , then looking at the beauty put it on general hashtags. Whosoever made it , must be a great artist, and we must respect their insight on carving out such masterpiece.
