Roberto Duran is arguably the greatest lightweight of all time. His encounters with the other 3 kings of boxing in Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and the Hitman Thomas Hearns cemented his heart, will, and legend that not many others can stake claim to.
In the latter part of 1989, Roberto Duran encountered his most infamous, and dangerous foe in the Olympic Gold medalist Ray Leonard. This battle of attrition found Duran as the likely under dog, in fact he had moved up a few weight classes to fight the future legend at his stable weight class of welterweight.
The heart and determination Roberto showed on that legendary night cemented his best win of all time, and showed people that size does not matter at the end of the day...truth lies in the heart, and fearlessness of a fighter. The pride of Panama showed immense heart throughout his whole career, and is arguably the most brave fighter to ever climb weight classes in the sport of boxing ever.
Duran ruled the 70s and 80s with his brawling style, his career culminated with an astounding 103 wins and 70 knockouts. His first loss by by finish was to Sugar Ray in their incredible rematch, a fight legendary today with the 'No Mas' tagline still fresh in boxing fans minds. The brutality of the sport caught up to Duran, but nobody was built like this man.
He could not only dish out a hellacious storm of punches, he could also take it like no other. His TKO losses to both the Hitman Hearns and Sugar Ray were no true blemish on his record, these were welterweights and middleweights in their prime fighting a lightweight mad man who hadn't a care in the world.
One must recognize the fearlessness of a lightweight moving up to fight one of the most fierce and durable middleweight boxers of all time in Marvin Hagler. Duran showed immense heart fighting until the final bell, and not being finished by the legendary Marvelous one as many had in the past. Duran was a legend, and his heart and will are everlasting...
