Matt Hamilton: The Unlikely Star of the U.S. Olympic Team

One of the most talked about athletes from this weekend was United States Curler, Matt Hamilton. Hamilton grabbed everyone’s attention with his red hat and fantastic mustache on Saturday night when he was participating in mixed doubles with his sister Becca Hamilton. The siblings were unable to advance but got a ton of media attention. If you have never seen a United States Curler, Hamilton looks exactly like what you would think when thinking about a sport that in North America involves late nights, beer drinking, and good old fun. Luckily for us, the Hamilton siblings will compete in the men’s and women’s divisions this week.
Matt Hamilton lives only about 45 minutes away from Chicago, in Madison, Wisconsin. He has a full time job as an R&D technician. But the sport of Curling is the least physical of all Olympic Events. This allows much less time spent in the gym than nearly every other 2018 Winter Olympic athlete. Hamilton balances his 40 hours a week job with his passion for Curling by practicing at night and on the weekends.
The 28 year old Olympic athlete has participated in 3 Curling World Championships. His best performance was when he won Bronze in 2016. He did win Gold in the World Junior Championships back in 2008 and has had a ton of success in the United States Men’s Curling Championships. He won Gold in 2015 and 2017.
You can catch Matt Hamilton and the United States Men’s Curling team next on Wednesday when they face off against South Korea in the opening round. It will be must viewing for those of us that live in the Midwest.
