The Steemit community is a very special and unique place. I’ve seen many acts of great generosity. I’ve read some amazing posts and comments, and I’ve noticed that we have a proportionally high number of intelligent and like-minded individuals on the platform, that are willingly sharing their valuable insights with each of us.

How good is that?

To be clear - in the context of this article, like-minded does not mean that we all think and believe the same things - but rather that there are are a lot of people that share common values and aspirations. Our thoughts, beliefs, methods and goals for being here may differ significantly - but I also see many commonalities and that is I what I chose to focus on.

My feed constantly exposes me to new ideas, opinions, insights and research that helps me to learn and grow. Learning and growing (becoming a better human-being if you will) is very important to me - this is why I have chosen to rank it as my #2 reason for being on Steemit.

I Am a Global Citizen

I have viewed myself as a global citizen from a very early age.

By the age of 13 - I had attended 12 different schools, in 7 different countries with a curriculum that was taught in 5 different languages.

My parents chose not to enrol me in the international schools because they thought that I would learn more by being immersed in the local culture and language. They ‘threw me in the deep end and taught me to swim’ and adapt to new environments and build relationships with the local kids as I learned their customs and languages.

As challenging as this was on so many levels, it was one of the best decisions that they ever made. It gave me an education that not many people get to experience and for that I am eternally grateful. That does not mean that my education was better than the next persons, because in many respects it wasn’t. It was simply different.

I had to quickly adapt to a new language, culture and curriculum. One day I was being educated in Swedish and comfortably keeping pace with the class - the next day I was learning French and I found myself six months ahead of the class. One year later I was learning Dutch and I was 12 months behind the class, playing catch-up. It was a roller-coaster ride in many respects. I’m think that you get my drift.

I was forced to adapt very quickly and to integrate and make new friends. I was always the new kid in school and while I was never bullied, I was never the most popular kid in class either. I learned to make friends quickly and I became a keen observer and a student of human behavior - I soaked it all in as it shaped me.

When I was 4 years of age my Mom would take me to the markets, I was her translator. When she wanted to buy a chicken the shop-owner would hand her a living chicken, she was initially mortified. Mom told me to ask him to kill and de-feather the chicken, so I did. The shop-owner confirmed that he would carry out my instructions as he shook his head whilst calling us ‘crazy foreigners’ under his breath. He told us to come back in 20 minutes as he gave me a wry smile. Mom & I hastily moved towards the vegetable section which was a relief for both us, as it was for anyone selling livestock.

Kids Spend Less Than 10,000 Hours at School in their Lifetime

In 2011 (on average), OECD kids spent 791 hours at school. Assuming that each kid spent 12 years in school (it is less on average) that equates to a grand total of 9,493 hours of learning at school.

In my last post I shared with you that I consciously devoted the past 3.5 years of my life to discovering truth - that meant re-educating myself from the ground up.

I’ve spent (on average) 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the past 3.5 years researching history, and questioning almost everything that I was ever taught in school in my quest to discover truth - that’s over 15,000 hours of research in 3.5 years (alone) - which is well over 30% more hours than our children spend at school in the first (and most formative) 17 years of their lives.

I learned far more by conducting my own research than I ever did in school. I learned far more from my parents throwing me in the deep end and telling me to swim. I’ve learned far more on Steemit than I would ever learn on Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, You Tube, Twitter and Instagram.

Maybe that is because I checked out of these censored/fake social media platforms 8 years ago and have failed to keep up with the times - but I doubt it. I do watch good you tube content still but I don’t engage on the platform socially very often.

I’m not a supporter of the education/indoctrination system. I believe that children should be home-schooled if possible. If that is not possible parents should take a very active role in ensuring that they are the ones shaping their children’s worldview rather than out-sourcing their responsibility to the government.

Steemit is a Great Educational Platform

We live in a world of fake-news and a comprised education system. We are fortunate that Steemit has provided us with an uncensored social media platform to write about the things that we care about. I’m here because I love to learn and Steemit is without doubt one of the best educational platforms that we have today.

My truth may not be your truth, that’s ok. I am merely sharing my truth and ‘introducing myself’ to you during this series and I welcome hearing your truth.
