Is it the end for Google+?
I just heard this news on Google+. It seems they had a data leak earlier this year, but didn't make it public. Wall Street Journal broke the news, but that's behind a paywall. Other sites such as the BBC are also reporting it.
I've used lots of social sites over the last couple of decades. Many of those no longer exist (identica, Multiply, Orkut, Tsu to name a few). In most cases all the content disappeared from the web, but I do have dumps of a couple of these in case I find a way to use them.
I joined Google+ soon after it started. I liked the clean interface and lack of ads. It is still ad-free and that may be part of the issue. It's never really been a revenue earner for them and it never took off like some other sites even though everyone who logged into Gmail or other Google services had an account.
I liked the way you could group accounts you follow into 'circles' and later they added 'collections' so you could categorise your posts. I've followed lots of cool people there and many kept using it. Unfortunately the world decided that Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were better places to be.
This recent breach may have been the final nail in the coffin. Apparently they are rebranding it for enterprise use, whatever that means. I'll miss it and I may lose track of some people I followed there.
In theory our Steemit posts will live on as long as there's a witness to process them and an app or site to access them or we can just download the whole blockchain. Images and other media may not be as safe depending on where it's stored.
Just keep Steeming on.

I think you nailed it with that comment. It just wasn't a "cool" or a "hot" place to be, neither something you could feel special about using, nor somewhere where everyone was actually congregating.
It failed long before any leak. After all, Facebook has leaked, and noone cared, because it's hot. Still, I don't like Facebook, and don't use it, as I think it's neither cool nor hot for my whole life history to be bought and sold to god knows who.
I didn't use Google+ either, just because it never appealed, never seemed to draw me in.
I do like Steem though. :)
poor google + it was supposed to be good to get your website ranked on search engines. probably not anymore. shame google shame. i totally dislike the new upgrade of chrome and gmail.
I was really excited about Google+ when it came out. I thought it had a lot of potential and that it could really be a game changer. Sadly it just never lived up to the expectations and Facebook already had too much of a stranglehold on the market. It is probably just as well they are closing it down. Now they can focus those resources on something more worthwhile.
Google has failed several times at social, but I still like G+. There's some good people on there
I see someone in comments put a link where google says it is going to tell G+ bye, bye. This will certainly upset some. For me, well it has been many moons since I used it. Have a wonderful day ?)
We all use different stuff. Remember losing Tsu? It's always hard as you lose contact with people. At least Google give us 10 months notice
The official announcement is here:

If you still have your G+ account you should advertise your steemit account on G+.
I didn't even know that it was still a thing.

Of course it was still a thing. It has a very loyal user base. But it's not a huge user base.
I have never used it that much. Maybe that's why I thought it was gone eheh
