Photos from a beautiful little island

Hello Steemit,

So it's midsummer soon here in Finland and because of that I wanted to share an experience I had from an earlier midsummer in 2007.

For those that don't know midsummer (also called St. John's Day) is the time period upon summer solstice. That is when the planets rotational axis is most incline with the sun. I researched this and it will happen this year on the 21st of June. That day will be the longest day of the year and in northern Europe it's celebrated with the midsummer celebrations.

The actual celebrations take place on the 24th of June this year and at least here in Finland it's a very big deal. Everyone leaves for their summer cottages to celebrate this and everyone is happy on this day.

Back to what I was going tell you, so that midsummer in 2007 me and my friends decided to go to this island called Sandön to celebrate. So we filled our bags with everything we needed and left for the island. The way there went fine even though we were a little crowded on the boat but we got there pretty fast. This is my first time visiting this place so I had only heard some stuff. But this island was a real beauty.

Here is a picture of it from the sky.

It's a fairly big island for our archipelago and it's actually connected to another smaller island where you can walk over from island to island and the water is only up to your ankles. Unfortunately you cannot see that other island on this picture. But if you look on the upper left edge you can see a strip of sand going out on the water. You can actually walk out there and it's really awesome. I used up all of my phone battery on music so I was only able to take one picture from when we went out there and here it is:

It's really interesting to see the different waves on the sides. One side looks all calm and the other is full of waves. This isn't even all the way out so it takes you pretty far out and it feels so cool to stand there on the edge. I can imagine that would make an incredible place to meditate or something on a calm day.

Here is another beautiful picture of it taken by someone else:

The weather that midsummer wasn't the best but it was still warm so we kept on celebrating for a long time. The plan was to stay the whole weekend. So at around 2-3 o'clock in the night a friend gets a phone call and he tells us that some other friends are also coming to the island to celebrate with us. So we continue basically grilling sausages and drinking beers until we start hearing a boat aproaching. The battery in our boombox had died so it was really quiet except for the waves. We hear them get closer and all of a sudden we hear a pretty loud boom from the side of the island where the sand stripe is. So we guess pretty fast what has happened and run over there to check it out and there they were with their boat in the middle of the sand strip.

We run over to check that everyone is okay and luckily no one got hurt and no serious damages to the boat either so we all gather to push the boat back out and wait for them by the beach. After that we just continued partying but it was kinda funny how that sand strip was so cool and everything but no one really thought that it would also become dangerous at night. The guys that drove into it didn't think it would come as early as it did and as you can see in the picture it was also pretty misty so really it was just an accident.

So yeah, that's my midsummer 2007 and other than the accident it was a blast. Also I wanted to tell you guys about this island since it's pretty special in my opinion. And if anyone wants to visit this place then 60.0341° N, 22.3254° E these are the coordinates.

Have a good midsummer this year everyone and remember to stay safe!
