SC-S31/W4-Movie Magic |Movies that challenge society
Hello Everyone!!
For this week contest, I watched again my favorite Indian movie Taare Zameen Par (2007), directed by Aamir Khan.
This is not just a movie. It’s a mirror held up to our schools, parents, and society.

The plot of the movie centers on Ishaan Awasthi, an 8-year-old. School is the reason he dislikes school because his books involve letters that dance. He lacks the ability to read and write. Why? All of us refer to him as lazy, unintelligent and naughty. According to his father, he is healed by beatings and shouting.’ Ishaan is sent to a boarding school as retribution.
The absence of family in his surroundings makes him silent, much like a plant without water. Ram Shankar Nikumbh is now a new art teacher. Ishaan is not a dumb individual, unlike others. He has dyslexia. His brain just works differently. Images and colors are what he thinks.? Ishaan's father, Nikumbh Sir, fights against the school system to provide assistance. Why? After winning an art competition, Ishaan feels more self-asured.

What social issue did the movie highlight?
First: Ignorance about learning disabilities. The movie accentuates two significant social concerns: The lack of awareness towards learning disabilities. If a child in India and other countries struggles with reading and math, they are commonly labeled as "stupid.". Our efforts are limited to elucidating the reason. Despite their efforts, many parents and teachers are still unaware of the words dyslexia, ADHD, or autism. The film depicts the destruction of a child's confidence due to their lack of knowledge.
Second: Toxic marks culture: The notion that marks are a sign of success is prevalent in our society. A 90% score is a low point for someone. Ishaan's father believes that life is a race. If you don't run, your creativity will be crushed. Despite the notion that only toppers are deserving of recognition, the movie raises questions about the conduct of artists such as painters, singers, and dancers. Are they useless?

Did it change how you see this issue?
Yes, 100%. Before this movie, I also thought kids who fail are just not trying hard. After watching Ishaan cry alone in boarding school, I felt ashamed.
It changed me as a sister and future parent. Now when I see a child struggling, I don’t say “padh lo”. I ask “what’s stopping you?” The scene where Nikumbh Sir visits Ishaan’s home and sees his drawings broke me. We are so busy in “marks” that we never see the child’s real talent.
This movie taught me: Every child is a different kind of star. Some shine in math, some in art. Both are stars.
How is this theme relevant today?
It’s more relevant in 2026 than in 2007.
Today competition is worse. Kids have school + tuition + coding classes at age 6. Suicide cases due to exam pressure are in news every year. Parents still compare: “Sharma ji ka beta 99% laya.”
For kids with learning issues, online classes made education harder . They really need face-to-face help, not Zoom. But schools still run like factories — same syllabus for all, same speed for all.
Taare Zameen Par is relevant because we still haven’t changed our education system. We still label kids like position holder , average or failure. We still rank them on report cards, not on kindness or creativity. This movie is a reminder we need to break this norm, urgently. As Nikumbh Sir says, “Every child is special.” We need to believe it and act on it.
Thats all for today's contest and I have tried to compiled all the task given in the contest. At the end I would like to invite @roohiasif99, @dasudi and @chant for the contest ❤️

Growing up, I felt like those who didn't have parallel A's were not hardworking enough.
I failed to understand that there's are different factors that impact learning — family background, exposure, state of mind, health limitations, etc.
This movie exposed me to understanding dyslexia. But there are many kids like this. Some have autism, others ADHD, etc.
Sometimes I wish that I got to know about them about a decade ago when I started teaching kids. However, that knowledge shaped how I approached tutoring kids afterwards. And I have recorded tremendous improvement in the kids I've handled in the last 5 years, including helping a C grade students become a consistent A graders. This wasn't because they had some special brain cells or better performing prefrontal cortex and hippocampus.
It's all about making the child see the talent in them and building on it while also working on their weaknesses. I celebrate ever teacher and parent who understands this and helps them improve.
What makes a person successful is their ability to be innovative thinkers. We need to encourage kids to not just cram information but be analytic and creative thinkers as well. Then work on their abilities. Like the movie confirms, "every kid is special".
