True or False? – It is Better to Give than to Receive

Is giving really better than receiving? Let’s dive right into this one!

This is a very popular sentiment and you'll hear more of it heading into the holidays. But is it true or not? Isn’t receiving better than giving? Does everyone have this backwards? Sometimes I think that I might be the crazy one. So let’s see if I’m right or wrong by examining the results of my very own giving and receiving.

The benefits of giving

I may not be the best person to weigh these benefits. I try not to give anything to anyone. Well, that’s not exactly true. I have given people reasons to laugh. Even if the laughter is at my expense. Does that count?

I’ve given plenty of criticism to many different people. It’s mostly unappreciated. My friends don’t stay friends for very long. I have no friends right now.

There was one time that I gave a lady a nice little butt squeeze at a bar. She became angry and turned around and slapped me. I bet if I was hotter she would have smiled and asked me to buy her a drink. That’s how the real world works.

I once gave my brother “the bird” and my mom saw it. That earned me some punishment too. It was usually the belt or the paddle. Or a wooden cooking spoon. My mom would buy the cooking spoons in multi-packs every week. She broke a lot of them when she would beat...err...cook with them.

One of my ex-girlfriend’s was given tons of gifts and given lots of meals while out with me. I treated her like gold. We dated for about two years. Then she cheated on me.

I gave six and a half years of my life working for a local company. I made my department respectable again. Everybody liked me and appreciated the work I did. Then management made up a harassment charge against me. They said I harassed a female co-worker. No such thing happened and she told them that. We were actually friends outside of the job and I always stood up for her on the job. But that’s how crappy companies operate. I was fired.

I even tried to give a bum some food. He asked me for money to buy lunch. I offered to buy him a bag of ten cheeseburgers for him and his bum friends that were with him. They declined my offer.

One thing that did feel good to give was a black eye. That happened in seventh grade at a new school. I got into a fight with another kid who really wanted to fight me. I won. I found out later that he was taking karate lessons and had been for a few years. I told my mom that his parents should get their money back. So I gave a black eye and a witty comment on the same day! Finally! Something beneficial!

But overall, it looks like the benefits of giving aren’t very good. Let’s check on receiving!

The benefits of receiving

I have a feeling that these will be much better. I always love receiving things. Even if it’s something I don’t like, I can usually just get rid of it. Unless it’s not tangible. But let’s see some examples.

I received a money-saving quote on my car insurance in about fifteen minutes when I switched to Geico™ a few years ago! That was exciting! High-five, lizard guy!

I won an employee of the month award at one of my jobs. I was in a department of about six people. It was kind of on a rotation so that nobody would feel left out. But I still received the award!

One morning, when I was around 20 years old, I received a visit to my apartment from a couple of detectives. They were looking for someone who they thought was me. They had the first name right. But that was about all the information that matched their suspect. My girlfriend was with me that morning. Naked. In my bed. So she put on a robe when I answered the door and joined me when she heard that it was the police. The detectives asked me if anyone else was in the apartment. I had a roommate but I didn’t know if she was home because I was sleeping. I told them that I didn’t know if anyone else was in the apartment with me. They both drew their guns, asked us to wait at the front door, and checked the apartment for themselves. The two detectives then realized that it was a mistaken identity. I received a card from one of them and he asked me to call him if I heard anything about the other guy. He had worked with me, according to the detectives. I never called. But I did receive the visit and the card from them. So that’s something, I guess.

I received a repossession notice for my car many years ago when I fell behind on my payments. That wasn’t fun.

On my second post to SteemIt I received a vote from @blocktrades and earned $70 for it! That was really awesome! And since then I have received upvotes from lots of other people too. Even other whales!

And I love receiving birthday and Christmas presents. Who doesn’t? If my birthday and Christmas happened on every day of the year, I would be a very happy man!

Conclusion

It was really close, but I have found my answer.

Giving is definitely not better than receiving! There is no benefit to giving. And if you give something that is not wanted, you can be hurt physically and emotionally. It’s just not worth it! My advice would be to NEVER give anything! EVER!

And maybe you should reconsider receiving too. Sometimes receiving can also be bad. But you’ll always have the choice to refuse what someone is trying to give you. Unless it’s the government. Then you have to take it or else you will be punished even more.

So these are the rules to live by.

Don’t give.
Only receive if it doesn’t hurt.
And if it’s from the government, you don’t have a choice anyway. They’ll do what they want.

I reply because your self centered, narcissistic attitude needs to change. Giving and receiving is not just about how good it feels at the time. Recieving something is momentary and fleeting. When you give, albeit a gift or your time, not only does it feel good at the time, but in most cases you will be well blessed ten fold over time. Time for a little introspection

My apologies. Perhaps, the humor is above my intelligence level. :-)

It's ok. And it's probably not above your intelligence level. Mine isn't very high! :)
