Gotta Love Technology - I'm Employed by a Company That Never Met Me

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

I live in Norway, but I'm employed by a tech company in Stockholm, Sweden. They've never met me and I've never met anyone from that company either. I'm actually their only Norwegian employee that lives in Norway.

It struck me today how weird that is. I've been working there for a month now. And thanks to Google Hangouts, Skype, Slack, Google Drive and many other freat tools, it's easy to communicate and I feel like I'm part of the team.

I got this job after having had an online interview and done a case for them.

We do team meetings online on Google Hangouts and we also stay in touch daily on Slack. Slack allows you to send instant messages to your coworkers, if you haven't heard about it before.

In the end of August, I'm going to Stockholm to meet up with my manager, some coworkers and see the headquarters.
I love Sweden, so I'm very excited about that trip.

I just realised that 10 years ago, this would be imaginable, at least for me.
And I think it's great that the world is evolving in this direction. It's so great for me to be able to work from my own office in Norway and still feel like I'm part of the company.

My day at the office looks a little something like this:

-work for the Swedish company for an hour
-work for my own company for about seven hours. (Social media management for small comapnies.)
-work for Swedish company again for about an hour

For the Swedish company I am a Communication Specialist, so I do translations and communication like their Facebook page.

And the best thing is that I don't really have to be at my office for any of the work I do. So right now I'm working from my familiy's cabin in the fjords. And all of June I worked from the U.S. That's why I love technology.

Have you done remote working? Did you like it?

Welcome to the club Susanne! Remote work is a beautiful thing, isn't it :D I wrote a post on the topic back in 2012 (http://mycmgr.com/dear-employer-i-can-telecommute-and-get-more-work-done/) and what I said then applies now more than ever. Over the last few years I've seen the amount of remote jobs being posted online increase exponentially...back then there were few FT remote roles, and I'm happy to say this has changed. I've been working remote for a couple full time roles the last few years and I've never looked back! I even took a significant pay cut for one of them (to leave an office job), and it turned out to be the best decision I've ever made... might just write a post on that sometime, stay tuned ;)

Cool, I will check it out. What is FT? Same here, this is the best thing I've ever done. Not sure if I can ever go back to a regular job.

Home working has so many advantages! (one of the best I guess is that you don't have to do make up every morning lol). As a future MD I will never be able to try this. unfortunately.

You always insightful and funny

That's so nice to hear! :D I never know that I'm so noticeable lol

You are dear, with your insightful and thought out comments

Ha ha! Yes, I love that! I hate getting up. But I find it so much easier to get up in the morning when you are going to work for yourself and do something you love. :) You're studying medicine? That is so cool!

Yes, I do, but when I have to wake up 6a.m. everyday to go to hospital I wonder if I chose correctly.

You can be any where in the world these days, and I love that! I intend to test that out over and over again.

It is pretty great. And you should. You would love it too. Are you back from your trip?

Actually, my life has experienced some major changes. I have a post coming out soon about it. All fantastic, by the way

Very interesting post

Thank you!

really amazing expeariance.

nice dear good luck and wish you a very happy new job.

thats amazing.. you have your time and space... and your dont need to wear corporate attire everyday... and you dont have to be in the same room with your boss...

unfortunately.. i have to be with my boss 8 hours a day... a lot of files and documents...

thats life.. still surviving tho

It sounds really nice to be able to work from home! Especially in summer if you can be at a summer cottage or when traveling. In winter it's probably nice to have a work place to go to so that you don't get stuck at home all day long. :P

Oh yes. I do remote work all the time.
I run my own import company and more or less everything I do can be done remotely.
Right now I´m at the cabin in Hallingdal and enjoying the warm weather, fishing with my kids up in the mountains and taking a refreshing (read really cold) swim in the river.
And working whenever I must :)

How awesome is that? This has inspired me to get out more on social media and perhaps find a great remote job/income such as yourself. Great post!!
