Alone with the walls

in OCD4 years ago

Pretty much every square inch of wall in the new house is covered in some kind of wallpaper, the one pictured is in better condition than most - and it isn't great.

The plan is that we are going to have mostly painted walls, but the surface underneath the wallpaper isn't suitable to paint, so we have to add a layer of gyprock over the top. But. Nothing is that easy in an old house, and because the walls have to breathe to ensure no mold forms, it has to be the right kind of sheeting. I am slowly learning all of these things - very slowly.

This place is a bit of a live-in adventure for us and also a test of our patience and resolve. While we have only just started, we know there is a long way to go, many surprises to arrive and of course, concessions to be made. It is a balance between time, money and our energy. There are many compromises to come.

I think that I am pretty good with it and quite happy to take some time in order to compromise less, while my wife may be a little more impatient. That is okay, we have to compromise with each other too.

Relationships by definition require compromise and no matter how well suited two people may be, there will always be differences of opinion and preference somewhere. While it might be easier to live without the hassle for some, I think that part of being human is interaction with others and facing and accepting the personal consequences of it.

Part of the problem with online life is, it increasibgly takes the human relationships out of the equation and focuses on the needs of the individual alone.

And alone is how many are going to end up spending much of their life.

I agree. I cannot stand wallpaper. It's so common in Korea. It's the equivalent of sweeping stuff under the rug. Most rooms do better painted.

It's the equivalent of sweeping stuff under the rug

Exactly!

My wife wants some feature wallpaper perhaps, I am not so keen. We also have some old wood panel walls that we will keep for texture and character - but the wallpaper...

We also have a lot of other stuff we need to hide under the rug :D

I love old houses~ We are currently renovating an old Victorian with 4800 Square Feet and three floors and a walk-up attic. It was built in 1869, so it is a perfect blend of wonderful and a lot of work to renovate. The people before me took down the wallpaper! (Can I hear a praise God!?) and there are existing plaster walls, which are a lot of work/money to fix. In time, I say.

It is a mixture of fun and frustration, but, it is a weekend house, so we can afford to put some things off, but, only for a moment or three.

I don't mind fixing and living. Someday, it will be amazing. I look forward to that!
