Not an ATM, at least atm
When I joined Steemit, there was a 'bit of a dip' in the price of Steem and perhaps luckily, I had no idea what that meant. In fact because I was so inexperienced and largely blind to the way Steemit worked (let alone the markets), I hardly read any of the cryptocurrency posts or how-to guides that could have helped me understand. Again, blessing and curse as during that time of unknowing, I didn't have to worry about prices, I just did my thing. The curse was that my thing was not overly great.
I didn't engage well, vote well, support well or do much well other than perhaps write okay. Luckily for me, my writing was able to attract some small amounts of support and while prices of Steem were low, I was able to collect more Steem Power from a 3 dollar article than for a 30 dollar article now. But, things started to change as I started to read more and understand what was going on.
I had been going 50/50 and had collected a little liquid to start trading. This opened me up to some new experiences and insights, namely, I had been behaving poorly at Steemit. I don't mean my actual community actions but I was just not understanding the potential here for me, or anyone else. I was treating Steemit as an ATM where I could get small amounts of value for immediate or future use instead of a place where I could build a nest egg. I started powering up 100%, started reading about various technologies and began working out how to be part of the community and help others.
The small amounts I had taken out of the platform to Poloniex, I started trading and trading and trading and my heart would flutter every time I bought and then the price dropped and a little rush when things went well. I am talking about single digit dollars here, if that. Then after a few months, I finally realised that I shouldn't be worrying about dollar values at all (I am slow on the uptake) as I am not going to be spending this any time soon (still haven't), I need to look at volumes of coins and potential future values instead. I felt like an idiot having missed something so fundamental.
So, it was back to the drawing board to relearn and experiment further. Experimentation has been a big part of my process and it has cost me a lot to do but, has also helped me come to personal terms and build my own process. It is far from perfect but there is some satisfaction in self-sufficiency for me.
At Steemit, I took the same philosophy and increased my posting schedule and vastly broadened my content. One thing I introduced was my thoughts on the platform and potential ways to improve it even though I had no real chance of affecting it. This meant that I had to investigate corners of Steemit and Steem and after posting, get perspectives from many others. It helped me learn fast, even when I got zero engagement as so often happened. Posts like this one help me consider what I haven't considered before.
The rule was though, my content had to reach a certain level of quality in my eyes but, I had to do it. I would force myself through articles and posts and spend massive amounts of times to create something that just passed the bar but, I would do it and do it and do it. It isn't accidental that I can write a fair amount now, it is a lot of practice and a huge amount of push. Yes, I am wordy and I could say things in much fewer words or in lists but, I have found it largely ineffective to do so for me, or the reader. Those that can't make it through likely won't act regardless, those that do make it through will think more deeply and consider and maybe adjust their thinking to create better behaviours.
Over the last year, I have done extraordinarily well in my opinion but it has all been guided by the idea that Steem Power is my goal and my future and for the platform to do well and more importantly, the community, others need Steem Power also if they want this place to support their future in some way. It is my nest egg and I must build it. I see too many treating Steem like an ATM and withdrawing all they can and the worst of it is that so many who could really do with it in the future, will miss out because of their short-term approach.
I see so many get payments come in and it all goes out to an exchange. This isn't going to affect my future too heavily here but, it is going to affect theirs as they are going to find that the ATM will reduce its output heavily and quickly over time and, their window to really be part of the community will be narrow. People will say that they need it and I understand this but, it cannot last that way. At some point, they will be left in the same position they started if they do not use their earnings to secure their position in the community.
Prices are low, engagement is hard, votes are not worth as much, there is uncertainty in the markets, people are struggling to cope with all of the pressures. This is the time to build the nest, the foundation for the future. It takes work and dedication and a lot of learning and trial and error to develop it but, it is this that will hold the egg and protect it until it can hatch and take flight.
If you want some stability and opportunity later, learn all you can and push yourself through the mud. The work must be done now and the better the work, the brighter your future even though each day may seem dark. It is not the time to treat this place as an ATM, at least at the moment.

One thing that I' ve noticed is that you indeed manage to write so much so often, and most surprisingly it is good stuff. I was and I am still amazed about that. It takes some real devotion and capacity to be able to put it all out like you do. If you say that it comes with practice, I am happy to read that hoping that it will actually work for me as well.
And now to the topic - it is clear that there are two types of steemians here on platform. Those that want to get free money and those that want to get free money to be able to root into the community. There is no person here that skips the first part of the definition. However, the former ones are those that create content and cash out, and I assume that the content they create is not with added value as its only scope is to make money. Latter ones are those that create content and don' t cash out because they want to reinvest of what they earn in spreding their branches into community - with possibility have higher upvotes for oneself and for the others, to gain influence in showing appreciatin for good stuff, and to show support for friends and those that think alike.
I think with time we will see Steemit as the hub for community building and whole different kind of understanding of what support and appreciation is. The other ones will wither away or at least diminsh in numbers.
Perosnally, I can' t wait to gain more power. And not only to have more power to vote but also to be able to invest in what I think would create better content for myself (equipment, travels, studies and so on). It is all in a distant future but as long as everything that has been attained here on Steemit goes back to Steemit, in whatever form, is a good way to go. And I will personally stick to this way of thinking. :) I love being here, and I love for the constant search of creation. :) Thank you for these reflections @tarazkp!
This ^
I have to run to IRL job. I will comment properly later. Thanks. :)
You have a pretty healthy view of things and it will be people like you who will benefit a lot in the long-run here. People spend a lot of time worrying about what the whales are doing when they should be tending their own garden and growing what will nourish them in the future. Doing this won't only feed their close circles either, it could provide seeds for many to start. Thanks for really taking the time to comment well. I might take your quote and write an article later on it and will credit you of course.
I am very glad to read that my contribution stuck with you. :) It makes me happy if I managed to inspire your for a new post, at least a little bit. I will be looking forward to it. :) Thank you.
I have only been using Steem for just over a month & have to say from my limited knowledge so far that I agree with what you have said here. Some of the folks who started the same time as me have treated it like an ATM & hey presto those are the ones that are no longer here.
All of my activity so far has been to power up every little cent earned & into growing a reputation to move forward with as I see today's minnows as tomorrows whales.
I read the other day that from all those who started in January 2017, only 7.5 percent have posted in the last 6 weeks. Quite incredible. People may see this as a retention problem of the platform, I see this as more an intention problem of the users.
Yes folks think its Facebook & it isn't, Once they realize that there is real work involved in growing a half decent account they up sticks.
lol, 'up sticks' is a term long unheard.
These words are a light. I have been in that position where I withdrew as soon as the money came. I am still desperate for money but I am understanding that investing will pay me in the long run.
So many of us on steemit are focused on the returns from other people's upvotes and curation. We have forgotten that an important role in business (steemit is a business) is to mind your business. You cannot expect someone else to do all the work to make you rich, while you write. If you believe strongly in the platform, you have to invest in it.
Thanks @tarazkp for these timely words. Peace.
This is how I see it. It is a great business too as i have mostly free reign and get to meet and interact with many different people and their diverse ideas and perspectives on the world.
Thank you for sharing our experience in the steemit site and the steps you have made until you have reached your current experience and strength.
The answers to some of the questions were stuck in the grease of my joining. I did not find any answers that I put to several people who had experience. They did not answer my question and some of them commented on things I did not understand.
I heard a few words a day so mixed up with it and I can not absorb many of them.
I told me in a previous comment that the publication of articles is insufficient for the offspring
What a great piece for those of us that have been here for a while and for new people only interested in making a buck. It is indeed a learning process and one that takes time to develop.
Quality posts, patience, and continuous learning. These are my key takeaways from your post. Thank you for sharing what you know and what you've learned.
an interesting experience and become a lesson for beginners like me.
I'm not so familiar with trending.
but I'm not giving up. ..
I'm starting to learn the market trending.
thanks @tarazkp
I am so inspired to read your blog.Wait & try our best.Although now the market rate is low, don't be hopeless.Carry on our daily work. One day we will be succeed & reach our object.Steemit is my dream.I always remain beside steemit.
Thanks @tarazkp
@Resteem & follow has been done.
This is the gold in your post and it is exactly what I thinking many of us are looking for asking, "How can I engage authentically with the Steemit Community?" Step forward with honestly, be willing to be vulnerable and then share what you find to be of value to yourself and others.
Currently I'm at step one in the process of creating my first post. One thought I had was that referencing work that I already appreciate on Steemit would be a good start. I searched Philosophy and found your post.
You are a great writer and I've already learned from you. Thank you for your insight and words of advice. I look forward to reading more.
Steem On Brother
Thanks.
There are many approaches and I prefer reading those who tell a little about the person, not just what they do. Remember to tag #introduceyourself though.
@tarazkp I totally understand what you mean by building the nest. I am building my nest on Steemit atm. Steem is my life n my life is Steem. I mean it.
