Pair work!

As an English teacher, I have lots of students who are in different levels. Teaching English is not all about explaining grammar rules. Students have to be involved in lesson actively. In this post, my biggest help is pair work activities. Pair work is really essential if you want your students to learn the things effectively which means that they can practice and use them in their daily things.

Pair works help students feel so confident in classroom. I have some students who feel so down when they make a mistake in lesson. When they make a mistake, they can't find anyone to blame or have a person who can correct mistakes. That's why, pair work is perfect to help those students get better at lessons. When you have them work in pairs, nobody feel like an outsider in classroom.

Limit teacher's speaking!

Pair works or other working styles which are aimed at keeping students active in class play an important role in teaching in high standards. One of the most crucial things that must be done by teacher is to limit speaking time. When a teacher speaks a lot, students become the listeners and they can't participate in lesson effectively which is a big loss for teachers.

At this point, pairs works become a game changer. Since it allows them to do all activities by themselves, we as teacher just can keep quiet and lead them in all activities. By doing this, your students will feel that it is possible for them to produce something by themselves. If you want your students to be the stars of your lessons, just let them work in pairs!

Brainstorming!

Your students might have different opinions about the things that they are learning. When you put them into pairs or groups, they share a lot of things with each other which is an activity to boost up their knowledge. I ask my students to write some dialogues. It is amazing to see how creative they are when they are writing dialogues.

Telling them to work in pairs and make the best in their work urge them to be as creative as possible. They feel the need of checking new word in dictionary and ask teachers lots of questions about forming some interesting sentences. However, when you are the only one who is speaking in the class, it is not possible to do it. That's why, pair works are essential.

Role plays!

For most students, the most important skill that they need to improve is speaking. When you ask your students questions randomly, they might feel a bit down if they are not good enough to answer you back. At this point, role plays can help them to feel more brave. As we all know, role plays require partners which means pair works strike again to help them!

I usually ask my students to perform their works verbally so that everybody can learn what they have written. At this point, it is important to give them feedback supported by teacher. While performing role plays, some student may make some noise and forget to respect others' work. it is important for teacher to be strict on this issue not to hurt students' feeling. Don't forget that students might be shy and being laughed at their work will demotivate them quickly.

Education

All teachers should definitely use pair and group works to conduct more active lessons. All students love them as they can see that it is possible for each students to achieve something which is all teachers' aim!

I agree with you. It is wonderful to see everything students can do, properly guided, working in pairs and doing role playing.

But sometimes they don’t listen and talk about other stuff and make it look like they are doing something

it is the hardest part of doing these activities!

Thank you so much for choosing my post :)

You've got some interesting ideas here, @teachblogger - I agree with you - letting students help each other rather than the old 'chalk and talk' by the teacher at the front of the room is very valuable.

I find, as you touched on here, that students are far less likely to participate when the teacher is directing from the front of the room. This also means that often, when they have a question, it will go unanswered, but give them a chance to interact and question, and suddenly their education begins to take off.

I do also agree with @tornadoman - this sort of activity does seem to produce a loader classroom if not managed appropriately!!

Thanks for your post.
