DNA suggests 10,000-year-old Brit had dark skin, blue eyes
The first modern Briton, who lived around 300 generations ago, had “dark to black” skin. They call him Cheddar Man.
Scientists from Britain’s Natural History Museum and University College London reported the finding Wednesday after studying the remains of an individual known as “Cheddar Man.”
To perform the DNA analysis, museum scientists drilled a 2mm-diameter hole into the ancient skull to obtain a few milligrams of bone powder. Cheddar Man's genome reveals he was closely related to other Mesolithic individuals - so-called Western Hunter-Gatherers - who have been analysed from Spain, Luxembourg and Hungary and used to live around 300 generations ago.
