The lockheed Constellation 1049G, or Super Constellation" was the most popular of the Constellation line. In order, Lockheed produced the original L-049, then came the L-749, the L1049G, and the L1649A (Starliner). Although not the most recent in the Constellation line, it was the most prolific version. There several variations with some aircraft fitted with a nose radar and tip tanks for extended range flights. Flown by many airline companies, it was probably best known whe n it was in use by TWA, Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa. other lesser known airlines also flew the aircraft making it the biggest success story for Lockheed in the passenger transport arena. Lockheed went on to build the "Electra", but it never really got into the passenger airline business like it had been in the 50's and 60's and early 70's. The aircraft you see below is the original aircraft I'll be flying in the simulator today. With no nose radar, it's nose is more rounded and it was jnot equipped with the external tip tanks. This particular aircraft was used by Air France in 1966 and in this photo it is being serviced at London Heathrow airport.
