Nuggets of being a successful leader
I remember my days in the higher school! Certificate studying for my advance level in general certificate of education; one of my lecturer who loved motivational saying would cover the walk-away \corridor walls with saying like " when the going he tough the tough get going and "quitters never win and winner never quit". These saying were imprinted in my mind . As a result when I started teaching and writing in the field of leadership and. Management , I used such saying to help people remember key point And to encourage them too.
I hope this little write up will give you the business smart and relationship skill you need to become an effective and able leader ,and manager. I hope you will also come to realize that the best way to achieve high performance and remarkable reward is with a caring "Business heart " for the people that you are opportuned to lead
NUGGET 01
The key to developing people is to catch them doing something right”
According to Ken Blan Chard and Spencer Johnson, catching people doing things right is a powerful management concept . Unfortunately, most Leaders have a genius for catching people doing things wrong . In my own opinion ,I recommend that leaders should spend at least an hour a week wondering around their operation catching people doing right thing .
But let me remind you , effective praising must be specific. Just walking around saying “ Thanks for everything “ is meaningless , if you say great job to a poor performer and great job to a good performer you will sound ridiculous to the poor performer and demotivate the good performer .
Catching people doing things right provides satisfaction and motivates good performance , But remember , give praise immediately , makes it specific and finally encourage people to keep up the good work .
The principle can also help you shine at home , it is a marvellous way to interact and affirm the people in your life .
NUGGET 02
DONT WIAT UNTIL PEOPLE DO THINGS EXACTLY RIGHT BEFORE YOU PRAISE THEM
Many well intentioned leaders want to praise their people until they d things exactly right, complete the project or accomplish the goal. The problem here is that they could wait for ever .
You see “ exactly right” behaviour is made up of a whole series of approximately right behaviours , it makes more sense to praise progress it is a moving target
Can you imagine standing a child up and saying “walk” and when he fall down you say “ I told you to walk”and then spank him . of course not not instead , you stand the child up and he wobbles a lot . you shout “ you stood “ and show him with hugs and kiss , the next day he wobbles a step and you all over hi. With praise , gradually the child gain confidence until he fimally walks .
It is the same with adult , catch them doing the thing right and in the approximately right is fine .

WHEN YOU STOP LEARNING , YOU STOP GROWING
Great men and women of value make learning their life style , they are ever excited about every single new day , Why? They never know what they might learn that new day , their common slogan is always “ when I stop learning , I might well lie down because I will be dead , they ar!e learning right up until death.
Learning is more important today , than ever before . in the past , if a person was loyal and hard working , his or her job is secured , today the skill you bring to the party constitution athe only available form of job security. People who are continually learning and upgrading their skills increase their value in their specific domain .
NUGGET 04
IF YOU WANT YOUR FOLLOWERS TO BE RESPONSIBLE BE RESPONSIBLE TO THEIR NEEDS
The traditional hierarchy is okay for goal getting , people look to the head of their department and the top of organization for direction , but once goals are clear the pyramid should in essence be turn upside down , this way the customer are at the top of the hierarchy , followed by customer -contact people , while the president band chairman of the board at the bottom.
When this philosophy is implemented , your role as a leader changes from being” responsible to being responsive “ Your job becomes to work with your people rather than having them work for you , being responsive to your followers needs sets them free to be responsible ( able to respond ) for getting the job done .
Make your followers responsible for doing high quality work by responding to their needs and supporting them , that places the responsibility at the appropriate level with the people who do the work .

TAKE WHAT YOU DO SERIOUSLY BUT YOURSELF LIGHTLY
A tendency toward grimness and seriousness can stifle an organization's environment and limit it creativity, you can tell right way when you visit a company where no one is having no fun people look like they are running around with tight underwear on , they are long to lighten up, but they have no permission .
These days , leaders and manages are being offers courses in honour . These classes don’t teach the art of telling good joke ,they are aimed at helping people contact something they already have inside their sense of humour . Increasing someone natural ability to see the funny or absurd side of a situation will have a direct bearing on his or her effectiveness .
Today’s leader must are learn the value of a smile or they will be unable to fire up the ability of their follower to find real enjoyment in their works. So start thinking smiles until you become a smile millionaire ,people will be glad to see coming .
NUGGET 06
REAL COMMUNICATION HAPPEN WHEN PEOPLE FEEL SAFE
Real communication is a product of TRUST .
However ,most of the performance review and evaluation system used in organization create mistrust ! They are based on a normal distribution mentality that insist that there must always be a winner and loser , that has never made sense to me .
No organization make as habit of hiring loser ! You either hit winner or potential winners, so why would you ever sort your people out into a normal distribution ? Your job as a leader is to bring out their magnificence.
Find way to convince your people that you see them all as a winner or potential winner and you mean them no harm. When you do you will find that communication with in your group is greatly enhanced .
NUGGET 07
IF GOD HAD WANTED US TO TALK MORE THAN LISTEN , HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN US TWO MOUTH RATHER THAN TWO EARS
When you ask people about the best leader they ever had, one quality is always mentioned , they are good LISTERNER. Such people learned to sort by other. When someone say , it is a beautiful day listeners respond by keeping the focus on the speaker
But poor listener sort by self. If you express a concern you have , they will express a concerned they have .
I once work with a senior consultant In Lagos Sharon tehila skincare, clients told me ,”i had the treated dinner with Sharon recently , she is a wonderful person . When I ask what they know about Sharon whether she is married , has kid etc, they seldom know , they loved being with Sharon because she kept the conversation focused on them. Test the power of listen by taking time to listening and focus to others.
