The Root of All Evil
“Fear is the State's psychological weapon of choice to frighten citizens into sacrificing their basic freedoms and rule-of-law protections in exchange for the security promised by their all-powerful government.”
― Philip G. Zimbardo, The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil
For those who are not acquainted with Dr. Zimbardo, he’s the world-renowned psychologist who was behind the Stanford Prison Experiments, the Lucifer Effect, The Time Paradox… And lately he has been working on a very interesting study about evil and heroism.
What makes a young man in Tiananmen square stand in front of the state’s scary tanks and sacrifice himself?
Tough question.
What makes a good person go dark?
Tougher question.
It’s important to define words before entertaining any new thoughts or ideas, and in this case, evil is defined by: The use of force or/and deceit to achieve what you want.
If your ideas are good, you don’t need to force people to accept them, right?
When asked about the root of evil, Dr. Zimbardo didn’t go with the infamous mono-syllable otherwise called “Greed”. Instead he left a cryptic message.
The System.
Now, I know this is way too broad of a term to pin-point with painstaking accuracy, it’s like a total lottery to guess what he meant, but it’s an important hint nonetheless.
Which system does he refer to? The current forms of governance? How about old empires? Or does he mean authority in general?
I guess that we will have to wait and see.
The Root of All Evil
Money is the root of all evil, isn’t that what they say?
But what if there is more to the story that a non-living object with no conscience nor principles? What if the answer was a little bit more complex? What if there was more than one cause to the problem?
Even assuming that money was causing all evils in the world, what if money caused only a fixed percentage of evil, and other percentages were caused by other factors?
I mean, what happens to all those jealousy crimes, or hate crimes, or any crimes that have nothing to do with money to start with?
Should we blame them on the money too?
Here’s a crazy thought, what if money, just like flags before or ancient books, are mainly objects that are not even self-aware of their own existence?
For instance, there are so many people that love their country and flag but oppose the politicians’ wars.
There are so many decent people out there that were born into a religion they never thought about doubting… Yet they wholeheartedly oppose the preaching classes’s wars.
Any rational person will probably oppose using the taxpayer’s hard earned income to pack the prison industrial complex with innocent people.
No one wants their tax money to be used to bomb thy living shit out of other people. But why do these things keep happening?
Money didn’t make them do it, the flag didn’t make them do it, rhetoric did.
What if there were some sort of sociopaths out there who have another agenda and who tend to use those lifeless objects and inventing meaningless jargon to cause so much damage by appointing an enemy to fight.
Us Versus Them Until the End of Time
Have you ever wondered why thousands of civilizations come and go but the ruling class always seem to be the same?
They come with another name, another body, another shape but the song always remains the same.
Their Modus Operandi is identical.
A Song of Serpents
Us VS Them, getting people to fight between with each other left and right, cracking down on dissent and punishing anyone who questions their fictional stories that usually defy every single law of the universe.
They always tap into people’s fears and insecurities and manipulate them to harm other people who did nothing to them.
They always use force and/or deceit to achieve what they want, yet they always seem to secure positions of power.
Before this latest research on evil, doctor Zimbardo did several studies on similar subjects for over three decades now.
Mention aside deserves the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment where he studied the effects of authority on the human fabric and how it causes certain good people to do evil things to one another.
Personally, I’m a voluntarist, and I don't need to pull the 'authority' card. My kids – if someday I’m blessed enough to have some – will never be forced to listen to me because of genetics, instead I hope that if they do it'll be because I’ve earned it, because they trust me, because I was a good father.
I find life to be easier with non-forced interactions.
Children who wanna read are gonna read. Kids who want to learn to read are going to learn to read. [It's] much more important to teach children to question what they read. Children should be taught to question everything. To question everything they read, everything they hear.
Children should be taught to question authority. Parents never teach their children to question authority because parents are authority figures themselves, and they don't want to undermine their own bullshit inside the household. ― George Carlin
Closing Thoughts
Every time someone even dares to mention that the world is moving towards a more voluntary set of interactions, or that we are slowly moving away from coercive systems and adopting mutually beneficial ones...
Anytime anyone even tries to talk about that, there is an automatic reaction that immediately shoots up to the throat before you get the chance to finish the sentence:
We should never have a society based on voluntary values because there are bad people in the world.
On the other hand, taking the baddest of the bad, give them all the power and no accountability… That always seems like a good idea.
I think I’ll take my chances with voluntary interactions. I just don’t want to be fifty fucking years old and still choosing between the lesser of evils.
I don’t know the root of all evil, I don’t even know if there is only one cause, but one thing I know is that complaining about the root of all evil while rooting for some evil to root against another other evil…
The lack of money is the root of all evil ;)
Haha you're more likely to do risky stuff when your kids food is on the line. I see your point.
The lack of X is the root of all evil.
(Where X is anything that you desire.)
I've always enjoyed Jordan Peterson's talk on Tragedy vs Evil. It speaks about the fear of our finite existential state in the face of of infinite capacity for tragedy and suffering.
I never seen that. Thanks for the recommendation!
I need to check this out! Thanks for sharing.
So far, my very favorite article of yours: It is very potent, it has loads of latitude and depths, the subject can't be otherwise but appealing to me and your tone keeps reeling me into it.
Thanks a bunch for such quality work and discussion. In this day and age, such discussions are more than worth it and can't help but bring the mind to actually think whether it is from that angle or this one, now or later. Awesome work, thanks again. All for one and one for all!!! Namaste :)
Thank you! And you're right these discussions are great to have once in a while.
It's a difficult subject to approach, but you do you're best anyways. :)
I'm glad you liked it!
You also have to take into account that it is only evil in our perspective. I always think that successful devil is the one, who makes others suffer.
And devils of some sort exists because that is how the system created by someone (God, evolution, nature, you name it). So evil is essential to bring balance into the whole. If everything was surrounded by greatness, there would be nothing to learn anymore. That means were would be no point of existence, not in Earth at least.
As for the question about what makes everyone go to war against other races, I think the answer is "the system". There are people who have the power and need to make wars. It is very easy for them to seed that stupid mind into people heads that it is brave and of great honor to die for your country. I even wrote a piece yesterday, comparing war with a chess board. You might check it if interested. I learned a lot (at least I hope so) while writing it lol.
Great piece @the-alien I love to see this kind of articles on steemit!
Yeah I saw, great piece! I voted it when I've seen it yesterday.
You can only be a pawn in a war :)
Yeah, I wish we know what Dr. Zimbardo talks more about what he defines as "the system" that would be a interesting talk.
Thank you by the way!
The positive thing is that he is not yet dead. He might still make some announcements!
I was familiar with the experiment, but not with the doctor himself. I will have to check his work, seems interesting!
Thank you too! Have a great evening!
Yeah he's alive and working on "The Study on Evil" I assume not a final title.
Have a great evening too!
Thank you!
I love this post. I agree about the money thing... but here is the most important point to me "Personally, I’m a voluntarist, and I don't need to pull the 'authority' card. My kids – if someday I’m blessed enough to have some – will never be forced to listen to me because of genetics, instead I hope that if they do it'll be because I’ve earned it, because they trust me, because I was a good father."
That is an absolutely perfect attitude to have before becoming a father. Kids will listen because they have to. Kids will want to listen because you are a good dad.
That's an amazing insight Brian ("Kids will listen because they have to") I didn't know that but I love it.
I'm sure you're a great dad from all the time we know each other, that's why I respect your advice on that a lot.
Thanks man that is very kind. And you sir are a good man. Believe me, that will translate to fatherhood should you choose to take that on.
Thanks man, that means a lot!
Learn to become a minimalist. Live simply. Seek sustainability and self-sufficiency away from the system as much as possible. Be more human and less enticed by the 7 sins. Materialism and consumerism is the curse to man kind.
"Seek sustainability and self-sufficiency away from the system as much as possible."
Hope in the future it would be easier :)
We can only control our future as an individual. It starts by living the change we want to see and inspiring others to follow. Lead by example. Live with intent. :)
Be the change you wanna see in the world, I totally agree!
100% - We can all do it. It comes down to collective vision and communication. I feel it is happening however we all need to do more.
Good article. Today we have the technology to set in motion with Agorism (or voluntary interactions). The blockchain is one such technology that rends obsolete much of the bureaucracy and centralized power structures.
Absolutely!
I really hope agorism goes global .
You know, when Gutenberg introduced the printing press, it turn the Middle Ages upside down. The knowledge hold by the priests were handed over to anyone who could read. People could have access to knowledge that previously was out of reach. I see a parallel between the printing press and the net new emerging systems based on the blockchain and peer to peer, as they put an end to centralized control and censorship. As the society changed in the Middle Ages due to technology, today's society is bound to have a quantum leap to a freer model based on these new technologies. I see agorism have a clear chance of winning .
Funny you should say that :) This was my very first steemit post seven months ago :)

I suppose it depends on what you define "money". Is money only currency? Or is an emotional exchange between two people also a form of money? It certainly has worth.
Indeed its not a game worth playing. Amen.
True, I think the proverb means the exchange between to people, though I could be wrong.
The quote is actually, "The love of money is the root of all evil." And I suspect this is because there are people who use money as an economic tool, but there are others who use money as a means to gain power over others and coerce them. Like heavy objects, firearms, automobiles, etc. the inanimate object is morally neutral, and the user is the one who must choose good or evil.
I couldn't agree more, it's an inanimate object that is morally neutral. Very well put, it's the user as you said who uses it for good or evil, or something neutral.
@the-alien
I hate it when someone says this to me I wan't to ask how on earth can that piece of paper have control over a person?
As for what is the root of evil - I thought of your other post - doesn't it - (evil) come from within ? So - I suppose - one's heart? The other things just enhances it or unleashes that darker inner self?
I personally think it's fear. People who are can't control their fears often tend to do bad things to other people.
Definitely from the inside, the problem is there are sociopaths that know how to manipulate those fears and more often than not, love to govern people sadly.
