I would listen in on conversations, eavesdrop.
But please do not think of me as the intermeddling type.
They intrigued me.
Not the content, the capture of the actual words.
I wanted to record even before the portability of technology allowed.
That's how it started. I would write down a word and once I had finished write another until I had a page of unconnected words captured by listening, concentrating only on that word being captured.

I would listen to the faces on tv, in a shop, on a bus and do exactly the same, recording the fourth or fifth word depending in the word used and how long it took for me to write it down.

On my thirteenth birthday I received a cassette recorder as a gift, which allowed me to tape people talking.

I would capture arguments, crowds of people, so many voices together where nothing was legible.

I would hear my parents making love at night quite often.

So what better way to start with the question: Have you ever heard your parents making love?
