Discovering the Selkirk Rex I

The Rex breed is a family of cats with distinguishable features and a unique coat. Within the Rex family there are a number of variations that have seen official recognition on a global scale. The Selkirk Rex is another breed that brings a different spin to this particular group of cats. Perhaps one of the most interesting facts about the Selkirk relaters to its origin and appearance. It is well known for its curly fur and was found in Montana. The first cat to be discovered would be the origin of the long running line and was soon used in a strategic breeding programme with a selected Persian. The resulting litter produced healthy kittens with half of them possessing the curly fur coat.

While other Rex cats have had smaller success in breeding due to dormant genes, the curly kittens found much success due to the dominant gene of the original Selkirk. This resulted in a mixed batch of kittens both curly and straight haired variants.
The initial discovery of the Selkirk cat is regarded as fairly recent and was first discovered in the late 80s.
