Building Chicken Nesting Boxes & Chick Brooder In Off Grid Coop

I put a built in chick brooder and nesting boxes into my walk in chicken cottage on our homestead. This is a chicken coop that I am building to look like a small cottage in the back yard.

I am sharing our videos from the time we moved to our new homestead to the present. This will give you the background story. When I get caught up then I will be sharing our daily videos with you each day as we make them.

I put nesting boxes in the huge walk in chicken coop for future egg laying hens. Then I build a chicken brooder for little chicks on top, near the ceiling.

I put it there for a few reasons. Heat rises to the chicks will be up higher. This keeps them away from the larger chickens. And it keeps them safer from predators if anything did happen to get into the chicken coop.

I am using tiki lights to keep the chicks warm. This is a string of lights with little light bulbs. If one bulb goes out, the rest stay burning, keeping the chickens from dying of exposure.

The chick brooder also has a plastic slide out tray to make cleaning easier.
