Storytime - 2am panic attack

in #story7 years ago

Let me start off by saying. I do not enjoy heat. I like it when it is warm but heat is a no go. Any time the room is warmer than I like it to be, the fan has to be on or I get nose bleeds... Combine that hat with humidity that makes you feel like you are locked in a coffin, you get what happened to me this morning.

Last night was normal, I switched on the fan, turned it to face me (my husband doesn't like the fan) and went to bed. It was still too hot so I only had the corner of the blanket draped over my waist (only because it makes me feel comfortable and safe). I probably fell asleep at 12, but by 2am I woke up feeling like I was having a panic attack only to actually get one. The power in the entire area we stay in was off, the darkness swallowed me. The one thing that was even worse was the heat. It felt like my body was drenched in sweat, the air was heavy and I felt trapped. No fan to help me now. So I decided to open up some windows... Bad call. Our plug in mosquito repellent wouldn't work and the moment I opened the window, I was bitten. Eaten alive and I had no way to stop them. I could only try to keep more of them out so I closed the window. The air outside was just as thick and it wasn't working anyway.

Next I tried splashing myself with cold water, problem number one, that wakes you up.
Problem number two. I had to dry myself off before getting back in bed and the moment I did the heat returned. I honestly felt like someone had a vise grip on my lungs. The only thing I could think of to do next was give myself some more space. So in bed I turned around and put my head on the side of my husband's feet. Who doesn't love the smell of feet in the morning?

So keep in mind, my husband wears jackets in +30°C weather and he had kicked the blankets off of himself completely. It was really hot. The space thing worked, soon my mind calmed down and I could breathe again. It was still too hot to sleep but I was comfortable enough to stay up a bit.

Fortunately out of nowhere the humidity and heat were suddenly gone at 4am. I was so exhausted at that point that I happily got in bed the normal way and went to sleep almost immediately. The power only came back at 7 am.

If anyone knows any tricks to cool down a room or yourself when there is no power and you want to sleep but can't, please let me know for future reference.

you can make a home made swamp cooler out of a 5 gallon bucket. There are many versions of this and if you google or Youtube it you can get a lot of ideas. A general list: computer fan, small aquarium water pump, boat battery, and an aquafilter. These work great and can keep a room super cool. If this seems too difficuld option B would be to get a battery powered fan. All the best

I'm not sure if they sell battery powered fans here in South Africa

You can order all the parts you need to make your own battery powered swamp cooler off the internet. I imagine you can order a battery powered fan off the internet as well if you are in South Africa. Of course, I may be wrong. Good luck!

Here is a Youtube link to one of the many DIY designs for a home made swamp cooler.
CHEERS!

You can get a rechargeable fan! When power goes off it will still be active for a while

I have it 😔
