WIRELESS REAL-TIME TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE -Thesis Presentation & Documentation

in #thesis6 years ago

Hi everyone! I am very pleased to share with you our thesis project during our last term in college. Those times were crazy. We had the most rushed project presented with just two weeks to complete. Not only that, because during the documentation, we only have a couple of weeks left to compile it into a book and have my graduation clearance be signed at the same time. Thank God, it's all done!

This project is about real-time traffic monitoring on the streets and roads of Cebu and its neighboring cities, depending on where should be the camera be placed. It is a system composed of two cameras feeding traffic information wirelessly in a form of video data to the main database/display. It is a stand-alone system formed in a box or container, supplied by a battery with the integration of an inverter in order to get the desired power. There will be two video frames showing vehicle traffic of selected places that will be displayed on a large monitor or LED screen.

The main objective of this project was to give proper and real-time information to the riding community about the traffic situation on light-heavily affected streets during rush hours. It also displays current headlines and news, it has a weather system and has an advertisement slot for profiteering purposes. The study wanted to grasp the importance of the proposed project if it were to be implemented, its necessity to the riding and non-riding community and its scope of operation and limitations.

Abstract

At the present time, no other form of traffic-related problem that has a widespread effect on the public as traffic congestion. From the increasing volume of vehicles and population to centralized technological information, both have long been recognized as the main cause of traffic-congestion and misuse of information. One of the most recognized causes worsening the traffic congestion on the streets or on main roads is the prohibition of the public to access free and reliable traffic information. There has been very little work directed towards free and reliable access to traffic information especially in a place where government privatizes the use of viable information. An understanding of the effects of free traffic information on underlying problems about traffic-congestion on the streets and problems of misinformation within the society may help predict changes of traffic situation and information.

A Real-Time Traffic Surveillance system that provides a real-time traffic information and other relevant information is designed by the researchers and thus aims to get the effects of proper dissemination of correct traffic information and other important information for the good of the public. This system is built with advanced devices and configured components enough to deliver reliable data like traffic information in a form of a streaming video, updated weather conditions, and current news and happenings in real metro time. These data are free to access and to acquire by the public thru the use of the internet. By conducting extensive research approach, the relevance of these data to the effects of free traffic information is considered significant to the target society.

The results of the study show significant implications from which the respondent’s recognition of the system as a necessary and beneficial to the whole public. The advantages of Real-time Traffic Surveillance from any other traffic-related equipment is the accessibility of the system from which the public may use or have an access to it. Importantly, the results of the study show that the specified functionalities of the system bear an important role in the dissemination of correct information to the public. For future researchers, the system would be more informative upon doing such upgrades to the system that can assess wide coverage of people from the public without cutting its reliability and sufficiency in providing viable information.

Theoretical Background

Parts of the study were taken from the following:

  1. Implementation of Closed-circuit Television (CCTV) Using Wireless Internet Protocol (IP) Camera
  2. Video Transmission Using Wireless Network
  3. Reducing Traffic Congestion
  4. Principle of Operation of IP Cameras

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to the following:

  1. Riding Public - Riding public is a general term for a community of people who drives any type of vehicle. Thru this study and proposed system, they can be aware of the traffic situation of a certain streets and passages like bridges and tunnels. They can also be aware of alternative routes if heavy traffic is expected at present routes they are taking.
  2. Commuters - Commuters can have the access of the proposed system online and be informed of the situations that are happening on a certain road and opt to choose different roads to access or on commuting.
  3. Future Researchers - This project will help future researchers in their own study as reference

Scopes and Limitations

The system has some limitations and areas for improvement. The proposed digital display will focus on an entry point where the higher volume of vehicles, commuters, and ordinary pedestrians are passing. Since our IP-based cameras transmit data wirelessly, it will be relying on a wireless connection of internet where its performance varies over some factors affecting to its transmissions like physical obstructions, network range and the distance between devices, wireless network interference, and signal sharing. Other controls for IP-based cameras like PTZ (pan, tilt, and zoom) will be disabled thus it only shows the live streaming of the two cameras.

Conclusion

The researchers developed a system that provides the main functionality of the proposed system as the solution to the underlying problem in the traffic-related situation and the sub-functionalities as the solution to the problem for public dissemination of correct information. The researchers successfully implemented the system in the target environment and found out the level of importance of the whole design system from any other existing traffic-related program.

Recommendations

For the improvement and efficiency of the system, the researchers recommend a much greater Internet connection for the upload operation of the used IP-based cameras and for the download operation of any client or user from the server of the system. The researchers also recommend using IP-based cameras that are open in their own APIs or Application Program Interface and with higher mega pixel as specifications.

The following are some recommended modes of communication for the proposed system. Each of them has a distinct type of operation and provides variation of efficiency for the system.

  1. Peer-to-Peer Communication – The IP-based cameras will communicate with each other directly using radio antennas that offers P2P connection. The data will be transmitted to the server with the same operation from the IP-based cameras.
  2. Leased line connection – This offers convenient way of transmitting video data from IP-based cameras to the server provided that the internet connection uses a static ip-address which is for businesses operation only.
Both recommended operations were suitable for the proposed system and provides much better internet connection and will still make the proposed system mobile.

The researchers recommend some improvements for the components that composed the entire designed system. The following recommendations will enhance the video quality of the streaming video and can supply power effectively and sufficiently:

  1. High-End IP-based Cameras – The researchers recommend the use of high-end IP-based cameras that features higher mega pixel than cameras being used. The researchers used a 3Megapixel camera and that can capture recognizable image from a distance of 20 meters. With the used of higher mega pixel camera, image quality will be more recognizable by the viewers.

  2. Installation of Solar Panels – The researchers recommend the installation of the solar panels to the system. This is to provide more power to the entire system thus avoiding the regular recharging of the used batteries.

  3. Lastly, the researchers recommend about government funds acquisition for the project’s full implementation. Government’s support will give more resources to the future researchers and a bigger coverage for the implementation of the project. With the government’s support and approval, programs like these will produce benefits to the society or the entire community.
