LINDWURM FOUNTAIN

Neuer Platz is home to both, Klagenfurt's landmark the Lindwurm Fountain, and to a statue of the strong man who slayed the legendary beast. The dragon is also depicted in the city's coat of arms. The statue was made from a single block of chlorite schist from the popular Kreuzbergl hill in Klagenfurt. Legend has it that 300 young men dressed in white pulled the statue to Neuer Platz in the year 1593 – the dragon weighs some 6 tons. The fountain and the statue of the strong man were added in 1636.

LINDWURMBRUNNEN

Am Neuen Platz befinden sich sowohl Klagenfurts Wahrzeichen, der Lindwurm als auch sein Bezwinger Herkules. Der Lindwurm ist auch auf dem Klagenfurter Stadtwappen zu sehen. Die Statue wurde aus einem einzigen Block Chloritschiefer gehauen - der Stein stammt vom Kreuzbergl, dem "Hausberg" der Klagenfurter. Im Jahr 1593 soll die Statue von 300 weiß gekleideten Jünglingen auf den Neuen Platz gezogen worden sein - der Lindwurm wiegt rund 6 Tonnen. Im Jahr 1636 wurde das Denkmal durch den Brunnen und die Herkules-Statue erweitert.

On my birthday the ÖBB (Austrian Railway) let me ride for free, so I decided to go on a trip to Klagenfurt, check out the downtown, Christmas market and eat at the Landhaus.

An meinem Geburtstag ließ mich die ÖBB kostenlos mitfahren. Deshalb entschloss ich mich, nach Klagenfurt zu fahren, die Innenstadt, den Weihnachtsmarkt und das Landhaus zu besuchen.

KLAGENFURT

Klagenfurt - Neuer Platz

On the Alte and Neue Platz there was a Christmas market. The weather was great, sunshine and no wind and hardly any snow that day.

Am Alten und Neuen Platz gab es einen Weihnachtsmarkt. Das Wetter war großartig, Sonnenschein und kein Wind und kaum Schnee an diesem Tag.

The Wappensaal at the Landhaus was closed, so I took images through the window.

Der Wappensaal im Landhaus war geschlossen, also machte ich Bilder durch das Fenster.

I planned on eating there, and I did find a table, even though it was fairly busy at the time. I decided on a basic meal of roast pork. To start with, since I was a bit chilly, I had some tea, but switched to beer later on to wash it all down. The bill was not high, and the service excellent.

Ich dachte erst daran, ein Foto von meinem Teller zu machen, nachdem ich fast mit dem Essen fertig war.}

Ich hatte geplant, dort zu essen, und ich fand einen Tisch, obwohl es damals ziemlich voll war. Ich entschied mich für eine Grundmahlzeit, Schweinebraten. Da ich etwas kalt war, trank ich zunächst Tee, wechselte aber später zum Bier, um alles herunter zu waschen. Die Rechnung war nicht hoch und der Service ausgezeichnet.

Happy Birthday Otto! I didn't know that OBB was letting you use the train for free on your birthday. I'll check out SBB (in Switzerland) if they offer the same. I doubt so but it's definitely worth to check.

It's a great trip that you made! I really like the Christmas market. Did you get some chocolate from that place?

How nice that you have snow in Vienna! I talked to my friends in Bratislava and they have snow too. I'm really happy about that as I'm going home on Saturday and I hope it's going to be white Christmas there.

Klagenfurt looks like a charming small town. And you definitely had a lot of fun there :)

Thanks - the deal with ÖBB is for holders of a Vorteilscard - my Senior card costs € 29,- a year. Even one short trip pays for it, getting 50% off on tickets.
I still have to rummage through the Christmas markets in Vienna (having been sick up until just recently). I did not take luggage to Klagenfurt since I had no intention to shop.

You seem to have had a really amazing birthday trip. Happy birthday!!

The first photo there, with the sculptures, look really interesting and incredibly beautiful. They clearly seem to be a connection between the dragon and the strong man, maybe the statue of both of them facing each other have some sort of hidden meaning?

Those snow frosted plants look really nice. Glad that the weather didn't stand in the way of your adventure.

The city at night looks so cool. I guess the Christmas lights kinda added to its beauty.
