Introducing "Feedbands": A new way to stream music, earn bitcoin, and plant trees!

in #music7 years ago

While we were at SXSW 2019 in Austin, TX earlier this spring, we were introduced to a new initiative called Feedbands. Many of the people in the music industry are talking about streaming platforms as the future of music consumption, the biggest players of which are Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon and Google Play. While it's true that these platforms mark a paradigm shift, they have not always moved in a direction that best benefits the artists.

Enter blockchain. There have been a wide range of initiatives who have attempted to create a streaming service leveraged by a blockhain. The idea being to increase efficiency and remove bloated operating costs, building an economy where the artist and the consumer are in direct connection. In early 2018, when the ICO boom was at it's height, we kept our eye on a handful of platforms that we thought could have a future in the space, but as the market began to retract, many of them lost their steem (pun intended).

Feedbands was the brainchild of Graham Langdon, who first created the initiative as a communal living space called the "Kale House" in California. The house rules were simple: "any musician could live at Kale House rent-free in exchange for jamming, anyone could play music at any hour, day or night, and all residents were requested to 'be good to the earth,' whatever that meant for them. The house filled up with more than twenty musicians occupying every available space in the house."

After spending time in a house full of artists and studying the challenges they face, he launched the platform FeedBands (www.feedbands.com) to create a new streaming service where the entire economy is based entirely around Bitcoin. Much like here on Steemit, listeners AND musicians are rewarded with Bitcoin for using the platform. In addition to using Bitcoin as the basis for the economy, Feedbands will also plant 1 tree for every 100 qualified streams through a partnership with trees.org. This will help offset the carbon footprint created by the servers hosting the platform and the mining of the Bitcoin.

A platform using a decentralized economy and attempting to reforest the planet? That is something we can root for!

Steemians, we encourage you all to sign up for the platform and listen to the many great musicians currently releasing music on Feedbands.
