Breeding time for penguins

This is an image of what it looks like when are in amongst a breeding colony of penguins. They are typically spaced out evenly from their surrounding neighbours with a nest constructed out of small stones and pebbles. Depending on the time of season you are in this part of the world will determine whether or not you are seeing chicks or penguins on their eggs. This photo was taken at the start of the year and as you can see there are chicks present underneath their parent, whom is guarding them from predators that are circling above, also known as a Skua.

As you notice form the photo these little guys are clearly up quite high and Chinstrap penguins are known as the 'mountaineers of the penguin world', which is quite evident when you see exactly how high they climb that can be twice a day activity for them in order to survive and ensure the survival of their young ones. It is a noisy and smelly place to visit with at times 1,000's of breeding pairs in the same area, which equals a lot of social conversation and interaction with their fellow neighbours.

Very interesting. I wonder why they evolved to have that black line, garnering them the name "chinstrap".

Evolution is an amazing thing! That name actually comes from soldiers in WWI, as the strap looks very similar to the helmets they wore during that time.
