"Frokost til haws" - breakfast beer?

in #blog6 years ago (edited)

Previous summer, almost a year ago, we bought this beer from a local brewhouse (Mylius-Erichsen Bryghus) while visiting Hvide Sande at the west coast of Denmark.

Finally, this Sunday was the (almost) perfect day for drinking it. I was out on the boat alone (ideally, I should have shared the moment with my wife) working with some varnishing and other stuff this weekend. Photo was taken at 08:10 - I'd like to keep a routine of raising the flag at 08 and eating breakfast shortly after. I had already been up and working since 06:15.

"Frokost" in Norwegian means breakfast, and early-morning meal - so "Frokost til havs" would mean "breakfast on the sea". To be fair, the Danish language differs from the Norwegian here - they use "morgenmad" (morning food) for the breakfast, and "frokost" for the lunch.

Here is the rest of my breakfast - a simple meal for a simple worker. Old dried bread, a tube of old mayonese that probably should have been thrown ages ago. A package of Danish-style Salami (how ironic - the title on the package is "Danish Salami", right under they are bragging that only Norwegian meat is used in the product)

I must admit, I'm associating the expression "til havs" with the open sea. My current position is outside Helgeroa, a realtively well-sheltered bay.

There are some other boats here as well, the nearest sailboat is by anchor and inhabitated, the rest are by buoys and without people.

Bryghusets Frokost is a mild, middel bitter, a well-smelling and refreshing beer, very well suited for a deserved break in the middle of the day

Well, what can I say ... I'm such a good beer reviewer - "it tasted beer!" :-) Reasonably light, I could have mistaken it for a lager. It was quite some taste from the hops - I don't like beers with "too much" hops, but this beer was just perfect for me, and a perfect fit for the sunny weather.

In Norway, it's considered unacceptable to drink beer (or any alcohol) for breakfast - and even for lunch. In Denmark it's quite normal to enjoy a beer with the lunch. What do you think?

Apparently a ferry for truckdrivers, coming from Porsgrunn and going to Denmark, weird effect at the photo. Did I manage to smear the lens of the phone with my greasy fingers? Or did it become so fuzzy due to the beer drinking?

That's a nice looking beer! I think it's perfectly acceptable to have a beer (or a glass of wine) with your lunch in Denmark. Especially during the weekend :)

Weather is so glorious in Norway right now. I just spent a week and I wished I could have stayed longer. Pure magic. One regret, I did not get to jump into the ocean or go to the seaside. You must be in heaven out there, with or with our beer. Ill say, Norwegians can have a beer with lunch. It all depends. maybe not on a work day :-)

Yes, this would have been the perfect place to stay this weekend if I would have had time to enjoy the weather. I couldn't really do bathing, as I would risk getting salty water on the surfaces where I was varnishing.

People were bathing all over the place. There is a nice, shallow sandy beach there, perfect for the youngest kids to play in the water.

Previous weekend (actually Monday, as it was a day off) it was a bit too cold for bathing - at least out where my boat was anchored up, the water was warmer on the shallow beach. I did do a long swim, but with my wet suit. It seems like quite some of the seems on the wet suit has started leaking. I jumped in for a second time after eating, still in the wet suit, but even with the wet suit I felt cold. Other people were bathing without wet suit previous weekend too, but I didn't see anyone doing any swimming - just quickly out and quickly up again. Lots more people bathing this weekend, and they spent more time in the water too.

I had decided to varnish the aft side of the ship again due to some scratches I got in Moss (embarrassing story, trying to forget about it) plus the cockpit area as it was definitively needed. We have a cockpit tent, and for various reasons I decided not to take it down (just removing the aft wall to make it a bit open) ... maybe a mistake to varnish the cockpit now, it was extremely hot under the tent, and I came to think - the cockpit area could as well be varnished on a day with rain or in the edge seasons. I came relatively late Saturday and I was still varnishing when it started to become dark ... clearly a mistake, I'm not quite happy with the results of some of the work I did. I started with the other half of the cockpit area really early Sunday to avoid the worst heat. It was sort of working out, except in the end the sweat was dripping from me. Quite bad, the varnish should neither be exposed to humidity nor salt ... so it's obviously not at all good when the sweat is dripping into the bucket with varnish or onto the newly varnished surfaces.

Sunday there was quite some wind - that helped a lot, I could just go out on the deck, spread out my arms and legs and stand in the wind for a short while to cool down.

That is luxury though, for being in Norway, this kind of weather. But yes, I can understand it got hot, we kept running through the water spreader in the garden. Quite an ordeal taking care of these boats, haha your story is a bit funny, but hope it turns out ok in the end. Do you know how many degrees there was in the water then, this weekend? The subject came up of course at dinner haha I guessed 18°C Is that too high?

We do have a themperature sensor connected to the navigation system, but it's seriously broken, in one autumn it started showing higher and higher temperatures despite the real temperature going down. I've stopped consulting it, guess it shows around 60C now.

Hahaha Thats funny :-)

Hottest may ever recorded :) Great pictures. I love life at sea. I always get seasick on boats larger than 30 feet, but I love it nontheless.

Your phone felt the alcohol more than you in that last picture. Although I haven't drink alcohol for a while I never enjoyed beer in the morning. I had friends that were saying it's perfect, but not me. The perfect timing for it is in the afternoon in my opinion. Regarding Denmark, Carlsberg is my favorite beer ever, although I've noticed that it doesn't taste the same in every country and in Norway is for sure way more expansive than in Germany.
About the salami I can understand the Danish point of view: the meat is Norwegian, but the recipe Danish.
The view that you have there is perfect for breakfast and I guess temperature is also somewhere in the 20°C range.
Enjoy your sailing!

It's beer is harmful and very dengurus for humanity groups, so please we should be this is no touch & drink. However it's buy is ban if Possible; 🦉

a good beer u can drink when ever u like but a newer drinking in the morning am more having a beer after work kind of man.
its a good relaxing thing sitting outside in the heat after a long day.
am more on the wheat beer like Paulaner highly recommended if u have not a think u can find in in kivi and meny atm,,,so u not ned to go tyo vinmonopolet

In my personal opinion, wheat is something that should be used when making bread, while barley should be used for beer. I'm not much fond of wheat beer, and I'm not much fond of bread made from barley.

agree to disagree then :)

Double post. Giving a modest 1% flag

Sorry. Don't know what's happening, but I had more of these double comments lately. At first it shows me broadcast error. I hit post comment again and then it appears twice.

Yes, it has happened with me too. Also, from the eSteem cellphone app it often seems like the comment wasn't posted at all.
