Secrets of Scandinavian gods. Sacurity above all (Algiz)

in #writing7 years ago

Algiz is the rune of security. Protection is its main function, its purpose. It is important to understand that the protection that the Algiz rune brings to us is purely mechanical. The energy of Algiz can be compared with a flak jacket. The flak jacket does not feel any feelings towards us, it protects us, because it is so done. It should also be noted that when we talk about the protection of Algis, then we are talking about passive protection.

There are different meaning for the name of this rune. Late Scandinavian "Elgr" means "Elk", Gothic "Algs (Algis)" means "reed".

  Anglo-Saxon Runic Poem says:

Eolh-secg eard hæfþ oftust on fenne
 wexeð on wature, wundaþ grimme
 blode breneð beorna gehwylcne
 ðe him ænigne onfeng gedeþ.

The Elk sedge usually lives in the fen,
growing in the water. It wounds severely,
   staining with blood any man
who makes a grab at it.

This last translation reflects well the significance of the energy of Algiz: the reed rustles, as if warning of danger, at the same time it can prick, protecting or defending. Thickets of reeds are usually quite dense and can also serve as protection. If we talk about the later meaning of the symbolism of the reeds, in Christianity it is regarded as the place "where the salvation came from," since it was in the thickets of reeds that the baby Moses was found. Of course, this has no direct relationship to the runes, but it helps to better understand the symbolism of the reeds.

As an answer to the question, Algiz tells us that what we do or are about to do is safe for us. Of course, this does not mean that we can deliberately neglect the safety rules. Although, on the other hand, when the energy of Algiz comes into the situation, it influences in such a way that the person himself does not want to take risks.

Inverted Algiz means problems in the sphere of our security. It is necessary to be careful, and again and again to check all vulnerable moments from the point of view of safety. In ancient times the inverted Algiz was considered a bad sign. It was even often painted near the date of death (direct Algiz was painted near the date of birth).
