"Steem Monsters" + "Drug Wars" -- Power Strategy Tips #34
As I have now been playing Steem Monsters and Drug Wars for several months, I've wanted to contribute something of ACTIONABLE value to my fellow players (and FUTURE players) - but NOT just fill my Steemit feed with daily images of quest reward - or battle - SPAM, (no offense to those doing so). Ultimately, Steemit is about ADDING VALUE to the social experience - that is the magic of blockchain technology. So, after some serious pondering, I decided that a weekly "Steem Monsters + Drugs Wars player strategy diary" type series, with CONCISE and ACTIONABLE tips, would be of most value to my audience. Please let me know your thoughts (good and/or bad), and I hope that readers (now and into the future) will benefit from this series. If you gain a better understanding of blockchain, gaming, "blockchain gaming", marketing, and/or any other area of knowledge I end up exploring as this series naturally progresses, then I will have done my "good deed" (of providing value) for the week. Also, feel free to hit me up on the battlefield...
** I have decided, for this week's series post, to move the highly data-dense section on my pack-opening process, and results, to the LAST entry in the post (instead of the FIRST), simply because I want to see if that may incentivize readers to make it through the shorter sections, and gain some practical tips BEFORE moving through the more tedious - albeit VALUABLE - breakdown of the packs, and reallocation of DEC resulting from those packs. You, of course, are free to scroll down to (or past) that section (and/or any other section(s)), as you please. Just from an OPTICS perspective, though, I think readers (especially new ones) are less "intimidated" by the GIRTH of these posts if the more CONCISE and DIGESTIBLE sections are presented first. Let me know if you prefer this delivery format. **
1 ) When Bitcoin started nose-diving this past week I decided to go ahead and INDULGE my CARNAL DESIRES by selling another 0.03 of BTC from Coinbase to buy another 100 (+10) "Orbs" pack batch. In the past update I explained that this is part of my larger strategy of moving SOME of my BTC off of Coinbase (as a result of feeling a bit uneasy about the more "mainstream" direction Coinbase is moving in, and also to "not put all of my eggs in one basket), but I ALSO wanted to experiment with how the lower price of BTC might also benefit me (relative to my #steemmonsters activity). In fact, one thing I found was that since the price of the 100 (+10) "Orbs" batch is STATIC (currently 240,000 DEC for me right now) while the price of BTC fluctuates, it actually cost me LESS (in terms of the value of the BTC sell) for this new batch ( at ~ $7,000/BTC) than the previous batch (at ~ $8,000 + BTC). I am continuing to monitor the price of Bitcoin (specifically the ratio of BTC:STEEM) so as to at least have the pulse on when it is an ideal time to sell BTC for STEEM to get THE MOST amount of Steem while at the same time considering the value of BTC/STEEM relative to the cost of the SteemMonsters packs and potions. The ultimate discount can be AMPLIFIED by the "in-game shop discount" (currently 4%) provided by my "DEC Hunters" guild, and so a 100 DEC (per pack) discount on a 100 (+10 free) Orbs promo pack batch (240,000 after discount) saves me AT LEAST 10,000 DEC, which could be used to buy something like another "Lucky Golden Chicken" to add to my collection (~ 8,200 DEC as of writing this post). That "gold" card also pays DEC bonus into the perpetual future, so even a savings of 10,000 DEC can have a significant long-term ROI if allocated strategically.
2 ) The @steemmonsters admin have started disclosing the new "Untamed" edition card specs, which will be released on Saturday of this week. I am reading (and re-reading) the first four posts they put out before the season ended, as a way to prep myself for the introduction of the new cards (through my daily pack-opening schedule). I am loaded up with maximum potions, and have decided that the best way to proceed is with the SAME EXACT strategy I have been following and outlining) for the past few posts in this series. So I am "ahead of the game" at this point. One thing that I am realizing is that the release of new cards is NOT just a "one time" phenomenon - but instead, a PROCESS. It will take some time to GET USED to the new cards as they are GRADUALLY added to my collection; playing them at different levels, and learning from using them (and battling other players who are useing them). So there is NO RUSH - just like there is no rush (at this point) on opening my remaining ~ 80 Orbs packs. It is clear at this point that it's the PROCESS which of this whole game which is most enjoyable, in terms of analyzing (and playing) the game, and being most productive, and so when the "Untamed" cards are released I will simply INTEGRATE those 100 (+10) packs (which I bought during the "first round" of the pre-sale) into my current daily strategy. One option I may take is to open ONE "Orbs" pack (for the 1st of two daily packs) and ONE "Untamed" pack (for the 2nd of two daily packs). I can then continue buying additional packs in line with the current strategy. My core collection is strong enough now to sustain this strategy, and I think that in the long -term this will have a significant ROI - so much that I can start buying DOGE, BAT, and/or BTC with part of the daily earnings from the game. That would be ideal.
3 ) Last week I received a : 10.311 SP and 10.202 STEEM payout from the previous post of this series. I figured that since I had been consistently achieving the goal of maintaining adequate "DEC liquidity" via my current strategy evolving in these posts, I would use BOTH the Steem portion of the payout AND the SP portion (so ~ 20.5 STEEM) to purchase my weekly "celebration pack" upon the payout of each of the posts in this series. Upon this week's payout I was able to convert 20.5 Steem into ~ 2,700 DEC, which was able to pay for one Orbs pack, with around 300 DEC left over to buy some cheaper (non-gold) cards to upgrade some of the more commonly-used cards in my collection. Well, it turns out that I hit a "Enchanted Defender" (gold - Level 4 - $1.80 DEC - 1,500 DEC) which NOT ONLY reimbursed me most of the cost of the "celebration pack", but since this is a "gold promo" card (and also the last card I needed to get this specific card up to Level 9) the ultimate (long-term) value of this card will be CONSIDERABLY HIGHER than the static value of the cards in this "celebration pack" over time, since the "gold promo" cards pay out a 20% (10% "gold" + 10% "gold promo") DEC bonus per won battle. And so this is a good example of what I am now calling the "amplification factor". That is, as you can see here, that 20.5 Steem payout will be worth MUCH MORE in into the future, both in terms of the (likely appreciatory) value of the "gold promo" card itself, and the residual DEC bonus which results from using the card to win battles into perpetuity (as long as DEC continues to be paid out for won battles).
Since I publish these posts AFTER I receive each payout from the previous post in the series, going forward I will include the results of the "celebration pack" of each previous post in each update (which I put out within 24 hours after the payout). So for this week, I was paid out : 11.309 STEEM and 11.497 SP, and so I converted 22.806 STEEM to DEC for 3,307 DEC. I actually had 0 (zero) STEEM in my Steemit Wallet, as so my strategy to conserve DEC liquidity was the only thing which enabled me to sell the equivalent of 11.497 SP (in liquid DEC in my @steem-engine account). In addition, this liquidity then allowed me to make another quick purchase (more below) with the leftover DEC.
Orbs (Pack - #3 ("weekly post celebration" pack")
nonkeepers - 240 DEC
** after opening the above "celebration pack" to find nuthin' special, I decided that - since I now had enough DEC on hand - I would go ahead and buy that additional "Furious Chicken" (gold - level 3) card (which was selling for a low $6.30 USD around three hours before the season ended. It cost me 8,086 DEC, which also left me with ~ 2,000 DEC liquidity on hand. I bought this card for a few reasons. Firstly, it enabled me to level-up my "Golden Chicken" to Level 5, and finally unlock the "rage" ability, which will help in battles. Secondly, it was a 'good luck for the new season, and for the release of the "Untamed" edition later today (upon which time I will have 100 (+10) "Untamed" packs to integrate into my pack-opening agenda). Thirdly, if I end up landing one or more additional "Golden Chicken" cards in the 50-card season rewards dump tonight I will then be able to IMMEDIATELY lease those out to one (more more) of the members of my guild who I believe will benefit from that lease. So, in line with the concept of the "Lucky Golden Chicken" this was a RITUALISTIC purchase. Let's see if the chicken brings me luck.
p.s. Turns out I INDEED got another "Lucky Golden Chicken" in the season rewards dump, and leased it out to the one the guild member. Now that I have reached Level 5 of my OWN "Golden Chicken" I will need 12 - 18 more cards to get the chicken up to any substantial increase in ability (+1 speed - 12 cards, +1 speed and +1 melee - 18 cards) and so I can take my time accumulating addition "Golden Chicken" cards (probably one per week), and leasing them out to other guild members as an ongoing morale-boosting effort).
4 ) On the #DrugWars front, the gang member who was doing the gang jobs made a post in the Discord server claiming that "the gang jobs are not paying out right now", and so while we try to figure out what is going on with the gang jobs I am continuing the revised strategy I have begun this week, which is to do one (individual - non-gang) job per day, while continuing my contribution of 500k of all three resources (drugs, alcohol, and weapons) each day to upgrade the gang buildings. As the gang buildings are upgraded ALL of the members benefit (ex. increased production of resources), and so while I am spending more time/energy on SteemMonsters right now (where the REAL action is at, in my opinon) I am still maintaining an adequate amount of activity on @DrugWars. In fact, the gang leader has expressed interest in learning more about SteemMonsters, as a result of my praise of the game, and so another thing I can do is help potentially "recruit" some/any of the DrugWars gang members to SteemMonsters - and possibly even into my "DEC Hunters" guild, where they will already be pre-vetted by me as quality participants. I could then mentor them to get them up-to-speed in the guild, and they can benefit from the IMMEDIATE 7% DEC bonus on won battles, plus 4% in-game shop discount, while the guild can benefit from the recruitment of quality members. In this way everyone wins!
5 ) Okay, here is the TEDIOUOSLY JUICY stuff -- the breakdown of all of my pack-opening activity (and the reallocation of the resulting DEC) from this past week. This process is always evolving, and so the data tends to grow more dense, and then I have to prune it down as I go along, so please bear with me as I (hopefully) get a handle on this. I think I am making steady progress with the formatting and organizaton of information:
November 22nd, 2019
Orbs (Pack #1 - Before completing daily quest, because I wanted to try to reach "Diamond III" level before completing the quest, to get more reward cards"
nonkeepers - "Minotaur Warlord" (non-gold - level 1 - $3.98 USD - 3,000 DEC - put for sale on market) + 300 DEC
Total = 3,300 DEC
Daily Reward Cards (it was too difficult to reach "Diamond III" this morning, so I will work on that AFTER the now completed quest)
keepers - "Sea Genie" (Gold - Level 4 - $0.72 USD - 750 USD) + 15 15 60
nonkeepers - 15 15 30 60
Orbs (Pack #2 - evening pack)
nonkeepers - 330 DEC

Orbs (Pack #1 - before completing daily quest, which was difficult today. Opening the "Orbs" pack got me over the hump)
nonkeepers - 240 DEC
sold 20 STEEM (weekly post payout of Steem + SP) and bought one "Orbs" pack
Orbs (Pack #2 - ("weekly series post celebration pack") - purchased immediately after ~ 10 Steem + 10 SP payout.
keepers - $1.80 - Enchanted Defender (Gold - Level 4 - $1.80 - 1,500 DEC)
nonkeepers - 210 DEC
Total = 1,710 DEC

Orbs (Pack #1 - eary morning (12:20 am) because I was sitting up bored, and just had the urge to open a pack. Let's see how this affects my game play later in the day (with one less pack (out of two) to open today). Had an impulse to open ANOTHER one (due to bad pull), but managed to control myself by going to sleep.
nonkeepers - 240 DEC
** (Nice that I hit the gold "Enchanted Defender" as that "Gold Promo" card will pay 10% (Gold) + 10% (Promo) DEC bonus per won battle into the perpetual future - so this weekly "celebration pack" will ultimately be worth MUCH MORE than the original ~ 10 STEEM + ~ 10 SP payout, AND I recouped most of the cost of the pack (1,710 DEC + 600 DEC ( + 3,000 DEC - 2,400 = 600 DEC (from conversion of payout to DEC) -- so 2,300 DEC out of the cost of 2,400 DEC/pack) as well! So this is a good example of how ROI can be AMPLIFIED in various ways in the game, and how it is often a GOOD IDEA to take the risk with the packs, as in the long-term the ROI outweighs the risk (at least with the "Orbs" packs, for now).
Orbs (Pack #3 - BEFORE finishing an especially TEDIOUS daily quest which I worked on all FRIGGIN' day!)
nonkeepers - "Mermaid Healer" (non-gold - Level 1 - $1.82 USD - 600 DEC) + 120 DEC
Total = 720 DEC
Daily Quest Reward Cards
keepers - 90 DEC
nonkeepers - 285 DEC
Total = 375 DEC
sent @forever-crypto 1 x "Lord Of Fire" (non-gold - Level 1 - $4.20 USD - 3,000 DEC) in exchange for "Ruler Of The Seas" (non-gold - Level 1 - $4.00 USD - 1,500
** Today's quest was HELLISH - mainly because I made the big mistake of trying to play ONLY water splinter (the quest splinter) WITHOUT switching it up to maximize my splinter power. In the morning I fell far below the Gold I level, and it took from morning until evening to get back up. then I got the above CRAPPY rewards. But I did earn quite a nice sum of DEC for all the won battles, and the three "Orbs" packs (detailed above) kept my morale up to finally get through the finish line for the day.
November 25th, 2019
"Orbs" (Pack #1 - opened on a whim in the early morning hours (12:30 am) just because I was FEINDING for a pack. I shouldn't have done it, but this did force me to observe what happens when I veer SLIGHTLY off the daily strategy (whereby I would normally wait until AFTER waking up, and finishing the daily quest). But at least it was opened technically on the new day (instead of adding an extra pack to the previous day (thereby breaking the rules).
nonkeepers - 240 DEC
Daily Rewards Cards
keepers - "Rusty Android" (Gold - Level 4 - $0.68 - 750 DEC), "Silvershield Archers" (Gold - Level 4 - $0.67 USD - 750 DEC) + 60 DEC
nonkeepers - 150 DEC
Total = 1,650 DEC
** bought one more "Orbs" pack, as part of the strategy of "buying one "Orbs" pack every OTHER day (using my daily DEC earnings). Also, buying the extra pack every other day helps me to monitor the supply of the remaining "Orbs" packs, whose decrease appears to now be naturally accelerating. I take a screenshot of the supply each time I buy a pack, for my records and calculations. Current remaining packs -> 112,575 packs
Orbs (Pack #2 - extra (3rd) daily pack, purchased with DEC earnings over past two days)
nonkeepers - 240 DEC **
Orbs (Pack #3 - actually 2nd (of two) daily packs)
keepers - "Goblin Chef" (Gold - Level 4 - $2.20 USD - 1,500
nonkeepers - 300 DEC
Total = 1,800 DEC
** I decided to start experimenting with buying additional cards (to upgrade EXISTING "high-use" cards in my collection, to see if the 2,400 DEC (per "Orbs" pack) may ultimately have a HIGHER ROI than the baseline 240 DEC from each "Orbs" pack (which is the more usual 4 x common cards (30 DEC each) and 1 x rare card (120 DEC each). Today I used 1,391 DEC to buy 10 x "Pit Orge" (non-gold - $0.11/card), and 956 DEC to buy some more "Furious Chicken" (non-gold - Level 1 - ~ $0.10 USD/card) - which equals ~ 2,400 DEC (the cost of an "Orbs" pack). Since I am only trying to hit a handful of the remaining (very rare) legendary and gold "Orbs" cards, AND because the beta cards are now sold out, it may actually be IDEAL to mix it up so that I alternate the "buy one pack every other day" between using the 2,400 DEC to buy one "Orbs" pack OR use the 2,400 DEC to buy single "Beta" card upgrades (both non-gold and/or gold). I will try this for the rest of the week.

Orbs (Pack #1 - opened BEFORE finishing daily (water) quest, as quest became hard. Got some JUICY cards to get me over the HUMP. I can't stress how helpful this strategy of "morale-boosting pack opening" is when you are in a rut.)
keepers- , "Goblin Chef" (Gold - Level 4 - $2.20 USD - 1,500 DEC)
nonkeepers- "Mermaid Healer" (non-gold - Level 1 - $1.79 USD - 600 DEC -- put up for sale on market) + 180 DEC
Total = 2,280 DEC
Daily Reward Cards (** Whoa! Opening the Orbs pack first totally paid off! Look at this mega-dump!)
keepers - "Fallen Specter" (Gold - Level 2 - $75.00 USD - 75,000 DEC) + 180 DEC
nonkeepers - "Ruler Of The Seas" (non-gold - Level 1 - $3.99 USD - 1,500 DEC (put up for sale on market) + 75 DEC
Total = 76,755 DEC [Whoa!]
** bought one "celebration Orbs pack" AND used 2,400 DEC to upgrade individual cards, in celebration of this "mega score" in the rewards dump.
Orbs (Pack #2 - "celebration pack, for JUICY rewards cards today)
keepers - 210 DEC
non-keepers - "Dwarvan Wizard" (non-gold - Level 1 - $1.71 USD - 600 DEC -- put up for sale on market)
Total = 810 DEC
** bought 18 x "Furious Chicken" (non-gold, Level 1 - ~ $0.12/card - to Level this card up to Level 7). The cost was ~ 2,680 DE (so ~ 280 over the intended 2,400 DEC (cost of Orbs pack), but the extra 280 DEC can easily be made up in daily DEC earnings from won battles today. My next goal is to gradually buy the 54 additional cards needed to MAX the "chicken:" and bump his/her melee up to 2. I should be able to do that within the week.
** since the "Furious Chicken" (Gold - Level 3) has come back down to ~ $7.00 USD (from $12 USD last week) I decided to take the opportunity to both celebrate my juicy rewards today, AND gobble up another "Lucky Golden Chicken). It cost me 8,589 DEC, but since my main strategy of maintaining DEC liquidity has been working I luckily had enough DEC to buy this additional card at the low price again. This is another example of why it's important to have DEC liquidity at all times (to take advantage of "low price" opportunities. I now have FOUR "gold chickens", with which I CAN now upgrade the chicken to Level 5, and unlock the JUICY "rage" ability. HOWEVER, two of the chickens are currently leased out to two members of my guild (part of my "Lucky Chicken" project in the guild). Each of these two leased cards will take one week to cool down, and so I am thinking that I should just KEEP those leased out, and work on buying up another two "Golden Chicken" cards to upgrade it more easily WHILE ALSO enabling those two guild members to continue earning a nice 10% DEC bonus (per each won battle) for using those cards which I am not currently using. Once I get the "golden chicken" up to Level 5 I will need EIGHT (8) more cards to get it to Level 7 (just to bump speed up by "1"), and so once I hit "Level 5" I can continue to buy up on gold chicken per week and lend each one our to new guild members. I think this is ultimately the best way to do it.
** bought "brilliant legendary" (500 charges) potion - 19,200 DEC
Orbs (Pack #3 - 2nd (of two) of the daily packs

973 DEC (20 x "Animated Corpse" (non-gold - Level 1 - ~ $0.04/card - to bump up to Level 7
2889 DEC (25 x "Furious Chicken" (non-gold - Level 1 - ~ $0.09/card - moving toward max)
** bought "brilliant quest (+5 reward cards): potion - 3,600 DEC
** bought "brilliant alchemy (gold) - (500 charges)" potion - 24,000 DEC - (in-game DEC balance - 10,940 DEC)
Orbs (Pack #2: "celebration pack" for hitting "Diamond III" (+10 season cards) level)
nonkeepers - 240 DEC
*** bought one more "Furious Chicken" (Gold - Level 3 - $5.70 USD - 3,000 USD) on a whim (when I saw it go down to $5.70 USD). Dow to 527 DEC (in-game) --> Oops! But it was worth the elimination of liquidity to add another "Lucky Golden Chicken" to my growing collection (to give out as part of my "Lucky Golden Chicken" initiative in the guild. One more to go to hit Level 5 (and unlock the "rage" ability), and then I can lease the rest out to guild members for a while.
** bought one more "Skeletal Warrior" (Gold - Level 3 - $2.74 USD - 3,000 DEC) for 3,181 DEC after completed sell of "Ruler Of The Seas" (non-gold - Level 1) from rewards cards today. The "Skeletal Warrior" (Gold) is now at Level 5, and has the "shield ability.

My goal now (one day before the season) is to strive to hit "Diamond II" (within 01 day 06 hours), using all of the available tools in my arsenal. One nice thing about @forever-crypto being willing to trade for my higher-level Orbs cards is that he provides me higher liquidity of those cards, since they are not selling very fast on the market. This is another example of the benefits of being in a guild and working together with people.

This was the first pack ((out of 111) of the 100 (+10) pack batch I bought during the first round of the pre-sale) which were released for opening with the new season. INSTEAD of opening the 10 free packs in one go, since I am becoming familiar with the cards I have decided to simply continue with my "two packs per day" strategy (one in the morning and one in the evening) BUT replace the 2nd daily "Orbs" pack with one "Untamed" pack. In the beginning stage of opening the "Untamed" packs, nearly ALL of them will be "keepers" as I build my collection and experiment with the cards.

Okay. This has been a DENSE week, and so I will conclude with the substantial "data dump" above, as I continue moving forward with monitoring and adjusting the strategy, especially now that the "Untamed" edition has been released. I don't want to overwhelmed the readers, NOR myself. I hope you find some/any of these tips useful in increasing your understanding and/or skill level in the Steem Monsters (@Splinterlands) and/or Drug Wars game(s). More JUICY tips to come with each weekly update, as I become more experienced and successful in the game.
See you on the battlefield...
