Introduction

Elements are substances that cannot be decomposed into more simpler or small substances. All matters are composed of elements.
Each elements are known not to be broken down by chemical reactions. Each elements consist of a number of protons in its atom.
Currently, there are about 118 elements but we will be looking at the first 20.

Note;
potassium has the symbol K because it was derived from the Latin name of the element which was Kalium While Sodium has the symbol Na because it
denotes the old name which was Natrium.

Importance of Some Elements

• Phosphorous(P)
Phosphorus is used in the production of weapons especially for people in the military.

• Oxygen(O)
Oxygen aids respiration and respiration produces metabolism of most living organisms including humans. Oxygen is a very important requirement for humans and other living things because they need it for breathing and oxygen occurs during the process of photosynthesis in plants.

• Calcium(Ca)
Calcium helps to maintain the bones in the body, it is also used to prevent muscle fractures.

• Aluminium(Al)
This is used in the production of some products like airplane parts, kitchen utensils, foils etc.

• Carbon(C)
Carbon contains sugar, glucose, proteins which are essential for the human body.

Conclusion

Knowing the first 20 elements is the first step to knowing the other elements. And it is a necessity that one learns these elements as well as their symbols.
