A working day to end the year

Today 31st December, 2024 started on what I would call unconventional note. Relax, I'll tell you why...

Just before I continue with this write up, I want to apologize to all the users who sent me messages within the week, as I couldn't respond due to so many engagement in the real world.

I have responded to some and will still respond to others today before I sleep.

I would spend some time this night to watch and read the activities in the blog and perhaps engage in anything that interest me.

And my day?

There was a lot of commotions in my neighborhood, It was abuzz with the sound of sirens and raised voices.

Behold, it was the police and they came to apprehend some fraudsters living in the neighbourhood. Well, this isn't a new thing...

Oops, those guys woke me up so early, they cut my sleeping hours. But it's all fine, at least I checked on my mum on the bed and she was fine and still breathing, that's the most important thing to me right now.

For some days now, I don't go to my shop early as usual due to taking care of a love one. I tends to have much responsibilities now in real life than ever.

But today, I was much earlier to my shop than the whole of last week.

I used the opportunity to clean my shop. Everywhere is now dusty due to this dry season.

With the shop tidy, I turned my attention to a faulty 50A PWM charge controller that had been waiting for repair.., it's been over 2 weeks since the owner brought it to my shop, but trust me, It's been some crazy weeks and months, I didnt have time to look at it.

But today, I fixed it. As a solar installer, I feel it would be appropriate to use this opportunity to educate others on how to fix such faults and how to avoid it - that's if people would read that part, hence my reason of writing this post in the first place.

I've outlined the steps I took to fix it below:

Disassembly:

I carefully disassembled the 50A charge controller to identify the main source of the problem.

This involved removing the outer casing and inspecting the internal components just like what we have in the picture above.

I found a blown capacitor, which was likely the problem behind the controller's malfunction.

Capacitor Replacement:

I checked the capacitor rating and replaced the blown capacitor with a new one, though not the same rating, but something close.

This can only be done by professionals as they consider so many other factors.

If you were to change such component and couldn't find the exact one, please do well to contact a repairer for some advice.

Cleaning and Reassembly:

Before reassembling the charge controller, I cleaned all the internal components to prevent any future issues.

I then carefully reattached the casing, making sure all connections were secure.

Testing:

The last stage is testing of the charge controller to confirm that it is functioning correctly.

And guess what? It worked perfectly okay. I actually used my shop battery to test it as you can see above.

I called the owner to come and pick it.

️Avoid charging many phones and even power banks on the charge controller USB spots, maybe a phone is okay if you really want to use that spot to charge

️ Avoid under-voltage from the input voltage.

Well, I couldn't point out exactly what lead to this damage, I was only able to fix the problem. Sometimes, things like this happens

Okay, this was a done deal now!

Obviously, I will do the job by next year..., next year is from tomorrow 😅.

I think it's going to be one of the biggest job in my solar career. And it's always a privilege to be busy reducing carbon footprint on planet earth while making some clean money.
