A short story: “The proverb of a tribe” in writing.

in #story8 years ago (edited)

The great Wall of China is highly protective so the enemies cannot go over it. The first time an enemy succeeded in going over the Great Wall was when the guards accepted a bribe.

This tallies with this Nigerian yoruba tribe proverb that says:

"If the household death does not kill one, the one outside will not succeed."

This means most problems are internal and not external, below is a short story from a bulletin I read recently, the story really touched me and I believe this to be true.

A SHORT LIFE CASE

(proverb photo by Greg Rakozy via Unsplash )

During the school days of the one who shared this story, there was one brilliant boy. In prize giving days, it was usual for this brilliant boy to go with all the available prizes. The lowest mark he would ever get in Mathematics was either 96 or 95. If he was given five and asked to answer three, he would answer the three and still go ahead to answer the other two, just for the fun of it.

When this boy finished his school certificate, he made 'A''s in seven papers; soon, he sat for his Advanced Level Examination, came out in flying colours and proceeded to overseas for higher studies.

According to the one who shared this story, he made mention that when this brilliant boy was leaving for Overseas, member of his family organised a very big party for him. After the party, as his family were escorting him to the airport, his younger sister(witch possessed) moved close to him and whispered into his ears and asked him to choose between the overseas he was going and his life.

The boy was surprised.

Anyways, because alcohol was freely served at the party organised for him, he thought his sister probably drank too much of it.

This brilliant boy went abroad, did excellently well there, securing first class degree in his course. One week to his graduation ceremony, however, he went to a swimming pool got on the diving board and leaped from there.
For some strange and unforeseen reasons, however, his feet slipped in the water. He smashed his head on the concrete floor of the swimming pool. His brain went one way and his smashed skull went the other way. The impact on the floor was much that this brilliant boy was brought back to Nigeria headless!.

I'll end the story here. This is enough to buttress the proverb I made mention of above.

In Nigeria, a lot of things that are believed to be myth and superstition in other countries are real in Africa. This brilliant boy died by what is called a witchcraft attack from his sister.

Witchcraft right from the ancient is said to be anyone or creature possessed by a fowl spirit.

The didactic of this story is that we should be careful of those within who call themselves friends, family, well wishers who display good intent towards us but on the inside wish for our downfall.

I just learnt from that short story that most of our problems are internal and not eternal.
If this brilliant boy had discern the warning of his evil sister before he travelled abroad, he would have preserved his life.

So my advice to every one reading this post now is to be vigilante of those inside and those outside won't hurt.
