Today, I can see the landscape breathing

in #writing8 years ago

Today, I can see the landscape breathing. Amorphous mist clouds hang low over the pond behind our house expanding through the surrounding forest then contracting again to the water.

I watch through the window, fascinated as the mists shape and dissipate with ease. It’s as if the Earth has donned a cloak of invisibility for the sheer purpose of invoking speculation and wonder.

Secrets and stealth creep upwards towards the house as the sun begins to set and I wrap my blanket around me a bit tighter. Through the camouflage of a world transformed, I just barely notice the outline of a deer nimbly passing among the trees.

He is such a spectral shade of himself though that I question whether he is truly there or not. The subtle marks his hooves trail behind him convince me of his presence and as if solving a great mystery, I feel content.

However, I realize the stories I create about what I am and am not, in truth, matter not at all.

Similar to the deer, I’m only the impact of the footprints I trail behind me.

Beautiful story and a nice photo!

To me, this feels like a metaphor for life. We are what we leave behind. We are so lucky to be alive, we might as well give something back and make the world a better place. From small gestures and actions every day to bigger initiatives like your underwater activism.

Everything you do, everything you say, will have an effect ('leave a footprint') so you should choose your actions and words carefully. “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.” (Kurt Vonnegut).

Thank you so much! Seldom do I meet people who are familiar with Vonnegut. I love the quote you posted here and definitely agree. :)
