Welcome to Steemit. In answer to your question.... a lot of active engagement if you aren't investing in Steemit with money. A lot of people arrive on Steemit believing that they will make 100 plus on a post because they have seen what the view as lesser quality do the same. But what's normally happening is those posts are using a bot service to buy votes to get the posts to that value. However, I have seen people who post daily and work hard at it slowly build a reputation and begin to make a lot after a year or so. But again it's work. As you are into photography you may want to look a downloading the Steepshot app which links to your steemit account and makes submitting pictures easy. The photography tag has a lot of great folks who regularly post under it. The things I've seen make very little are people who post crappy pictures that are low quality, naked pictures also known as not safe for work, pictures that are stolen from others. These types of posts and photographs don't tend to pay. But really good artistic photographs do. Ones that show real talent behind the lens and are thoughtful. The real key to making money on Steemit is the people. You won't make a lot if you are only posting and not connecting so reading others work and commenting is important. It helps you gain followers so others see your work and supports others who support you in turn. The key again is contributing. Most people will go to facebook if they want to see boring pictures without a story, or go to youtube if they want to see music videos, or go to twitter if they want to leave one line phrases. Most here on Steemit are looking for informative, sincere, well thought out, meaningful posts. There are a number of contest, groups, and initiatives that run on Steemit to help new users earn more and grow here as well. But you won't get rich quick.
