People who are easily disturbed have one advantage
Being easily embarrassed in uncomfortable situations is certainly not pleasant, but there are positive aspects - people are more likely to trust you, according to a new study.
Not only this, but people who are easily ashamed, are more likely to be true partners.
"Disturbance is an emotional signal for a person you can entrust with valuable resources. "Says Rob Wheeler, one of the authors of the study. "It is part of the social bond that fosters trust and cooperation in everyday life."
Here's what the lead author of the study, Dr. Matthew Feinberg, says:
"Moderate levels of disturbance are a sign of virtue. Our data suggests that the embarrassment is a good thing, not a flaw that we have to fight.
Of course, we are talking about normal levels of discomfort, not about crippling issues that sometimes affect people experiencing social anxiety.
Typical signs of interference are:
look down,
covering a part of the face hand,
a slight grimace or a smile.
By comparison, people who feel shame usually cover their whole face.
Inconvenient Moments
For the purpose of the survey, 60 volunteers were shot on video while talking about awkward moments they had experienced. These include:
meteorism in a public place
to think that a woman is pregnant because she has fulfilled
to give money to a ragged person, deciding he is a beggar
The clips are analyzed for the extent to which people are embarrassed.
Then they play a game whose idea is to test generosity.
And once again find that people who are more disturbed are more generous than others.
In the last experiment, people had to evaluate a trained actor who played to get the perfect test result.
Some people look at a version in which he is embarrassed by his success, others - a version in which he expresses only frustration.
It turns out that his people have more confidence when he is disturbed.
These are people with whom we have more desire to be connected, feel more comfortable and trust them, scientists are convinced.
