Quiet Days in the Lakes
Hi Steemians! Hope you're all well, a lot is happening/changing (for the good!) over here so to try and calm my thoughts I am reflecting on some calm days we have spent in the Lake District, I hope you enjoy the post! - Verity x
We found this beautiful lake that was completely still so the reflections were just lovely. It was after the autumn but the leaves were still orange and red which really set off against the grey clouds! There was some low mist which added lots of atmosphere and the rock in the middle of the lake made a great focal point!
I tried to edit this one a bit darker to show how amazing the reflections are and I love how the contrast came out.
The lake had beautiful framed views of the distant hills and boats on the lake. The trees around really made it look so pretty, I loved how the tree on the right had these amazing shaped leaves and against the white sky they really stood out.
The ground was still covered in hundreds of fallen leaves and I wanted to get a shot of how many there were so I put the camera on the floor and got really close to the water to get a new perspective of this lovely view!
There was also still quite a bit of snow left on the fields with the promise for more. I think even in these photos you can feel how cold it was, and its definitely reminding me how cold it was that's for sure! Sometimes when we go out intentionally looking for photographs we can be left uninspired so instead we don't put any pressure on ourselves and just go out and explore, or on walks. This is the best way to find new spots and I find when I am more relaxed I see more opportunities. This lake at first glance looked a little boring but the more and more time we spent there the more we saw. I loved all the reeds that were coming out of the water so wanted to spend some time photographing those.
But also just try and get as many different perspectives of the same view as I could. This lake was great as there was a large expanse of water so that you could get lots of different reflections from the other island etc. This show below shows how still the water is yet again, it was like glass! Its not often you see lakes like this and it really is amazing when you do.
I wanted to bring some more foreground interest in the next shots so used these beautiful reeds. I find that they give so much texture and movement to shots and in an anyway still shot it was just the right addition!
Also trying more focal points gave me more options. I was of course using my favourite lens again which is the 17-40mm Canon on my 6D which is the best combination ever, so this allows you to zoom in quite a way and frame scenes in a lot of other ways. I loved the diagonal and horizontal shapes the reeds were showing on the lake.
Getting up close to the reeds as well gave a really interesting picture, even though we hadn't really moved much all these photographs give something different which is what I really enjoy. To really make the most of the situation rather than take one shot and then move on to somewhere else its sometimes more of a challenge to stay in the same place and try and get as many different shots as possible. I really loved the colours of the reeds and against the blue tones of the landscape it was a welcome bit of colour!
The lakes always looks beautiful, in my opinion anyway!, but it is amazing how different it looks throughout the year. This scene is so green in the summer and its amazing to see all these orange tones and have it look just as beautiful! This shot was really nice with the amazing reflections!
To make more of focal point of the reeds I took a shot of just them against the water which then opens up a whole new series of photographs, it shows the reeds in a new light and makes them more into photographs of textures and shapes rather than just of the landscape, almost making them into more of an art photograph. The colours of the water were really nice and I love this shot!
After visiting this lovely lake we took a drive to nowhere in particular just to drive and find new spots! We came across this amazing view and had to get out of the car to get a few shots! I loved how the tree had caught the snow and left a blank space underneath the tree of just grass. It was in great contrast to the fully leaved orange tree in the distance which I really loved. The little sheep were happy walking in the fields and there was something really peaceful about this scene!
The road we had taken took us quite high up into the mountains were we encountered more sheep and also more snow. The clouds had moved in closer and closer and looked like there was more on the way. The light was going but created this amazing light of the sun setting between the clouds, wanting to make most of the light that was left we jumped out of the car once again and hopped into the field!
These little herdy sheep were looking quite expressive with their thick coats, it must be really hard for them in this kind of weather but their warm wool coats must help a little! They looked at us quite oddly as if it ask what on earth we were doing in the middle of their field on a cold winters day!
The light was drawing in but the views of the distant mountains covered in mist and snow was a site I am glad we saw! It was so pretty and made the cold a little bit more bearable!
It really did feel like we were the only people out for miles and miles, and this is why we love the countryside, there is so much of it here in the UK that going for a long walk its not uncommon to only pass a few people. Its being able to enjoy the countryside to yourself and feel like you are connected with nature. I think growing up in Wales definitely did impact how much I appreciated nature, we were always outside with the animals rather than inside with the tv, infact we didn't have a tv until I was 14 and that is something I am still very grateful for!
After the cold day spent outdoors in the fresh air it was time to head back and get warm again in the hottub! Not before of course going to the edge of a lake to properly watch the sun going down. There isn't anything I enjoy more, seeing all the colours change so quickly in such a short space of time and all the clouds rolling in, it was so pretty. Although at the moment I am enjoying the fact that sunset doesn't happen until closer to 10 so its a lot warmer outside.
The next day showed how ever changing the conditions are at this time of the year with blue skies and sunshine. So further down in to the lakes the snow had gone and the skies were clear, it was so nice to enjoy the landscape with some light and some sun! Its so nice when the weather is like this in the winter you somehow appreciate a lot lot more!
I loved this amazing tree and wanted to make a big focal point out of it so tried to frame as much of it as I could in the background. Luckily the background was really interesting too so it gave lots of contrast to the shot, all the different colours too to the blue sky, green grass and orange trees, it really was just so pretty!
And what better way to end a few days in the lakes than with a rainbow! They are some of my favourite things in nature and whenever we were younger we were told that if ever you pointed at one they would disappear so even to this day I don't even point at a rainbow I just mention that it is there and enjoy it while it is! And I think really that is all you can do with nature, enjoy it while it there, because it is always ever changing and unfortunately won't always be there, that's why I am always so eager to spend as much time as I can outside and appreciate it all!
I hope you have all enjoyed this little trip to the lakes and I look forward to sharing my next adventures with you all soon!

Hi, I’m sorry to hijack your post but I will do this only once and it’s just to tell that you have been selected for my brand-new directory. As not everybody is checking out mentions, I think this is the best way to make you aware of it.
You can read more about this new initiative here and I would greatly appreciate your feedback about this concept.
If you think it has some added value it would be great if you could resteem the post to make more people aware of it.
Also, if you don’t want to be mentioned on the directory, just leave me a comment and I will delete your profile from the website.
Thank you very much for reading!
Hi, that's ok! Thank you so much for letting me know, that's very kind of you, I will go check out the post!
Beautiful landscape with nice pictures. Amazing reflection in the lake. Like the double rainbow, well captured Verity :)
Thank you so much! I love this place so much, and the rainbow was so pretty!
Oh my god. What an awesome post. I could totally feel the cold, and so much more. Well done on conveying a mood. The silence of the water and the crispy clear reflections - very serene. Clears up the mind just watching those pictures. Love the way you describe how you go out exploring, where you decide to take pictures of and why, the choices you make in positioning and even editing. Great read, hope your post will get much more attention!!
Awww thank you! Glad you could feel the cold, it really was!! That's what I was wanting, a clear mind today so looking at these photographs really made me happy too! Thank you for your kind words!
Really nice view ;)
Thanks!
