Assalamualaikum everyone.. being a medical student we wait for clinical year since we get admission as we are really excited and learn clinical work and practice it. As i am in a government university we get alot of patients there so exposure is really good and we get to learn alot.

Today in my diary i decided to share with you guys a day in opd . These days i am posted in oral diagnosis opd ,where the patient comes first as he visits the dental department.

Every week we have opd for 4 days and other 2 days are for ward about which i will share some other day . This time lets only talk about dental opd. Being a 3rd year student we have to learn and practice at same time under supervision of a head.

As we started this opd i was really excited as we were going to check patients and diagnose the disease or problem they have. Whenever a patient comes he/she first go yo reception and get the form then they come in oral diagnosis opd thats there first stop . As in this opd the patient tells his problem and we conclude what he is exactly suffering from.

First thing is to introduce ourselves to patient and then ask about the reason which compelled him to visit a dentist , we write this complain in as the patient tells in his words only. Then comes the history in which we ask leading questions about the time the pain or problem exactly started , what stimulates it etc.

Then we take patients consent and starts the examination first extraoral ( on face) then intraoral (in mouth) where we examine each an every tooth to see if there are any caries , swelling , ulcerations, broken tooth , impacted tooth etc according to what patient tells.

The next thing we do is we get it rechecked by our head or a supervisor to confirm our diagnosis as we are still students and can make mistakes. As we get done with this we recommend patient to get his x ray done first and then we refer him to other opd that is related yo his/her problem.

Last thing we do is write down the patients registration number, name, diagnosis and our name in the record register and guide the patient to other department/opd . Finally we sanitize our hands and wait for the next patient.

If there are less patient we get time to study some things from our seniors who are there aswell so they would teach us some topics related to exams and assessments and tell us how to perform different examinations . If we are done with all this we sit with our seniors, head, supervisor and talk or discuss anything . They are all so good and humble towards us.

After our time is over we quickly get out of opd and run towards the cafeteria as we get so tired , hungry and thirsty too . At that time we only crave for one thing that is good food and proper fan or Ac as it's too hot these days and in opd we wear mask and gloves continuously.
