Should we modernize the town?

I'm old fashioned, what's the point in modernizing what works well?
Do we need to copy-paste places too?

It has been the trend for years to modernize everything. By modernizing I do not mean installing a sewer or water pipe or replacing the electrical wiring in the house so that all equipment does not short-circuit or set fire, but the alignment of villages and city centers. It doesn't matter where you are, the shopping streets and centres look the same. The charm of every authentic village and the specific architectural style disappear.

The screaming facades of fast food restaurants, clothing chains and supermarkets dominate the streetscape. It's impersonal, unattractive and certainly not inviting. I only know most chains by name or the outside. A tasteless whole. Primark for example. With my youngest I quickly walked through it, well through it, a few meters in and out. These are not the type of stores I like and the one in France is no different than the one in Germany or the Netherlands.

Some diversity wouldn't hurt, but art, just like architecture and a country-specific culture, is becoming a rarity. What once was has to be destroyed because nothing should remind current people of a culture that once was. The town needs to be modernized just like old-fashioned people like me because those are the living memories of what life once was. A life that I long for more and more. Old facades, sitting on a chair in front of the house door, greeting passers-by and being greeted back, people cycling while singing, happy faces and helpful hands.

Even though I was born in the Netherlands, I was always treated like a foreigner and now after so many years I feel like a stranger in 'my own' country. There is not much left of the country of my youth, the only difference is that I used to be called a dirty foreigner by Dutch people and today I am called a dirty Dutchman by foreigners living in the Netherlands.

I really do miss old times, there are many things that have changed today, people act so differently now. That community love, trust and togetherness is gone, cos as modernization comes, it changes not just the buildings but the way we access the new buildings. Cultures and traditions are slowly flushed down like a dirty toilet water. Yes change what needs to be changed but remember the value it once had, the old stories behind it, clean it a little but dont erase it totally. Let venice be their example. thank you @wakeupkitty, you always have a way of convincing us to stay right even when all is wrong already.

We all live on the digital highway no longer care if it rains or the sun shines unless we are forced into the next lockdown to many not much different from the life they were already living one behind the screen fixed on trolls fake and x-es told.
We didn't only lost our culture and individuality but also the creativity and skill to enjoy life in a slower pace.
Still, I am happy I met you, since there are not many people left who can think, wonder, read, hear and understand what the written word says.

A happy day with your loved ones. ❤️🍀

Yes, enjoying life now in sl0w pace is considered a lazy lifestyle, we now forced to focus on only how to settle the ever increasing bills... We will still try to find the joys within us despite all the slanders that the society brings.

Sounds like a good and healthy plan!

Hi Kitty, your thoughts on modernization that neglects local cultures and citizens' voices particularly touches me, even in Milan we are experiencing this unfortunate transformation. This forced development, without active participation, divides rather than unites, leaving communities at the mercy of changes that do not reflect their needs or identities. It is essential to recognize and enhance cultural diversity, integrating it into the development process to build a more inclusive future that respects everyone's roots.

I am afraid it's too late to change that, it's such a pity :(

Without roots people are lost, look at all those with identity issues.
If we talk about roots we are called nationalists which turns out to be bad and equal to ra cist.
How the world has changed.

your thought reminds me of the title of an old book without roots you can't fly🌻

That's the title of the book? It's true.

yes it is the title in Italy "without roots you can't fly" by Bert Hellinger. talks about the importance of the family to provide security in facing the lives of our children.

These prejudices alluding to racism, I believe, do so to disarm the freedom to think and have one's own opinion

But only if it comes to certain nations mainly western Europe

It seems we dance to the rhythm of eternal return: one cycle we fill the granaries, another the arsenals. What a "Danse" Macabre.

Thanks for the sunflower... You know this was once a girl in love with the sun. She married him but was not allowed to look at him ...
