So You Call Yourself a Writer
Do you call yourself a writer, artist, musician or poet? If you can say so with confidence congratulations. Many people, me included, struggle or have in the past, with calling themselves a true artist.
I write, I used to say, but I'm not a writer... i.e. I haven't ever been published. I'm happy to say that I no longer feel that way. I was published years ago in a UK poet magazine and even received a mailed copy with my three poems about cats. I don't know what I did with that book after many moves.
I'm not sure when I owned the titles of writer, poet, and artist and began to embrace my truth or stop feeling like a fraud. I would love to say I woke one day and declared, "I'm a writer, poet and an artist," but I didn't. I believe I just grew into that knowledge and now wear it gracefully like a grandmother her shawl.
Part of growing up is to grow into yourself and allow the truth to seep deep into your psyche and root there. I can't change it anymore than I can change my eye color. Life becomes so much better. We are puzzle pieces carefully fit into a beautiful masterpiece. Every piece neatly fits into the fabric of you.

Very interesting arguments you express here about self-esteem and self-knowledge. One is what it claims to be. There are writers who have never written a single word, but their stories transcend distance and time. as well as to those who have written hundreds of books that very few or no one read. I wonder, who of the two is a fraud.
