The purple heart
In 1782 the ‘Badge for Military Merit’, a symbol that still honours soldiers today, was created by General George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The Purple Heart, as the medal is known, is presented for ‘any singularly meritorious action’ and was intended to recognise ordinary soldiers rather than officers for their bravery and dedication.
