A Real Story About A Handicapped Girl That Never Give Up

Everyone on this world is unique (even twins have their own different personality). If you’re born in healthy condition - you are being blessed by the lucky charm. Some people, as soon as they are born being diagnosed with handicapped condition.

Some of them cannot barely see (partially or fully blind), some of them can’t hear (deaf), some are having incapable hands and feet defective, or IQ lower than ordinary people (Down's syndrome) - but this does not mean that these people have less perseverance and will to live than ordinary people.

Let me share with you a true story of mine on twelve years ago. . .

In 2006, I was still a tutor at a tutorial center. During my working period, I met a very special little girl at that center.

She just entered to junior secondary school; she is the second child in the family (with one elder sister and one younger brother and younger sister). Her Parents are opened a diner, their business is quite Ok, and the typical well-off family.

Happy days will not last long, her father get addicted with gambling. From casual gamble to huge gamble, bet after bet, until his mortgaged and lose the diner on gambling. At the same time, he also owed a large sum with loan sharks; he can’t repay all the debts, so he just absconded overnight. Left all the remaining mess and borne by his wife alone.

A wonderful family had tormented overnight, such a 360-degree transformation leave a deep impact on the girl's mother, where she’s suffering with bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.

In addition, the girl has a rather special physique - she is deaf and dull and has mild polio. Due to the inconvenience, usually her father picks her up to go to school and tutoring center. However, this responsibility now falls on her mother, so her temper suddenly became extremely agitated.

I remember once, the girl, as usual, waited for her mother to pick her up. Her mother arrived to the tutorial center, without any sign, she instantly slapped on her daughter face!

I was shocked by this unexpected situation. After the little girl got slapped on the face, her mother shouted and yielded at her: "I do not know what type of sins I had done in the past life, until I get birth a deaf, dumb and handicapped person like you!"

Then she kept beaten up that little girl. I saw it and immediately ran to stop her.

She began to shout at me: "Teacher, I asked you don’t get involved and today if I do not beat this little piece of shit, I will not give up!" I know the situation is urgent, and immediately called another female teacher stepped forward and took the girl to a tutoring room, while I tried to appease the little girl’s mother.

"Mrs. Wong, please calm down first, why don’t we sit down and have a talk."

Perhaps, she realized for her uncontrollable behavior, began to cool down her anger and sat down.

"Teacher, I’m really sorry, for being rude in front of you. I know I should not beat Boh Yee, but every time I saw her, it reminds me of my incompetent husband, those angers immediately rushing in my blood.

"Mrs. Wong, I know you did not mean it, and I'm sorry about what happened to you. However, you need to remember that the child is innocent and she does not want to be deaf and dumb for her own life. Even though she could not hear, but she could read body language of lips, and knowing that you were blaming her. This definitely will leave an indelible psychological trauma upon her future growth.”

"Teacher, what should I do now?"

"What you can do now is to apologize to your daughter, though you might be embarrassed to do it, but this is the quickest and most effective way."

"Awesome, also please remember, you cannot use violence on her anymore, and if we find any bruises on her body - we will do something about it."

"I understand."

"One more thing, there’s a Chinese old quote said: "A foot may be too short for something long; for something weak an inch is strong; everything has its weak points; sometimes a wise man disappoints." Everyone has their own possibility, as long as they learn and master the hidden talents; they will have a promising future! We cannot judge Boh Yee based on her unfortunate physique, and then denied or questioned her own potential. I hope you can take good care of her, trust me – she will be a bright star in the future~”

After the pep talk, the girl's mother went to the tutoring room, cupped the little girl's face with both hands and holding her in arms. At this time, I saw the little girl's face, with a brilliant smile, nodded slightly to me.

I resigned and left the tutoring center in 2008, and the day before I left the tutoring center, Boh Yee used her savings to buy a book as a farewell gift to me.

After a lapse of many years, I have already begun to enter my 40 stages, and that little girl also fully grown up into fine young lady.

According from my old colleague, I heard that she had achieved excellent grades in the STPM (equivalent to A level in Malaysia) examination and was awarded a scholarship by the government. She’s now further her study at one of the universities in United Kingdom, taking the accountancy course.

Knowing this good news, I also felt rejoiced for the little girl. I hope this wonder girl and her mother can live happily ever after…
