Real Life Captured #272: Phu Quoc Island Vietnam! Part Six (9 Photos)

Hey there friends and followers! In this "Real Life Captured Series" I do my best to bring you exactly that; the real life captured from destinations all around the world! After sixteen years of travel experience my favorite thing to do is walk around! That's right, I simply like to go to foreign countries and walk around. I observe (and now photograph) the people, food, culture, way of everyday life and bring it to you in this "Real Life Captured Series".

Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam; sad to say another major disappointment. For starters the food is horrible, your options outside of Pho (beef noodle soup) are mostly rip off touristy places on a street that is incredibly dangerous and, overcrowded, over developed and not big enough to hold the traffic. I saw two accidents there and almost got into one myself in the short time on this street.

If you are looking for food in the non tourist area, you better hold your stomach and keep your fingers crossed. Most of our time here was seemingly spent looking for a decent meal. Many of the beaches are polluted, dirty, and smell like crap. There is enough construction going on in this island to make you scratch your head. The couple beaches that are decent are crowded with Russian and Chinese tourist who don't seem to mind swimming next to pipes dumping sewage into the sea.

The island is basically over developed on the west cost, and underdeveloped everywhere else with densely populated communities of Vietnamese speckled about. When it comes to Islands in South East Asia I usually stick to Thailand, and for good reason. They beat this island in every aspect, beauty, cleanliness, friendliness, laid back social vibe, English spoken everywhere, better food, better beaches.....the list goes on. Phu Quoc compared to Siberia, ok it's not that bad; Phu Quoc compared to Aruba, Koh Phagnan Thailand, or the Galapagos; there is no comparison.

Since the island itself, the food, beaches, and culture all basically suck, including dangerous traffic in many parts, the highlights are man made attractions. Vin Pearl Land, a 17 dollar amusement park which was pretty cool, a 19 dollar high end BBQ on Thursday night at the Sea Shells Resort, and the worlds longest cable car ride that goes over the sea to a cluster of islands in the south; it's 8 kl long and drops you off on another island where a water park is built. Cable car and water park entry is only about 17dollars total.

I actually was here in this island about 10 years ago! Some parts have not changed at all, and I bet you can tell which ones those are based on the photos, and some things have changed drastically as in mass tourism from Russia, Korea, and China, and a ton of buildings going up on the west coast. All in all with a positive attitude and being ignorant to better places to go by comparison, you can have a great time here. Now come along and lets have a closer look at Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam!
