I won $75,000 for my writing!
I woke up around 4:30 am to take my medication —- I’ve been battling a nasty flu for a few days & take pills every 6 hours to reduce fever and pain.
Given that I had around a half hour remaining before it was time for my meds, I decided to check my email.
Head stuffy, eyes bleary I scrolled through my account in the dark, illumined only by the light of my phone.
I saw that I heard back from The Epitome Writing Foundation. I’d submitted a grant proposal, less than a week ago, for a few thousand dollars...
Incredibly, the email read:
Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that Yahia Lababidi has been awarded $75,000 as a grant from The Epitome Writing Foundation for the quest to further his writing pursuit.
Still half asleep, I could not fully absorb this waking dream and read on:
Chattered Financial Savings? Where had I read that before? Then, it dawned on me & my stupor deepened...
I’d received text messages the other day notifying me that $75,000 was credited to my account with Chattered Financials Bank!
Could this be true? After all these years —decades, at this point— of suffering for my art, with little financial reward— I was finally being granted a great gift from the heavens?
I went back to the Epitome website to learn more about my generous benefactor, McDougal Cohen,“a distinguished private investor and writer”
In the too-good-to-be-true congratulations email announcing my $75,000 award, I was told to expect in the mail a certificate and notice of grant award.
In filling out my grant application, I’d shared with the Epitome Foundation (among other things) my mailing address and a copy of my driver’s license, per their request.
Before sharing any further personal information, and too excited to go back to sleep, I thought I’d do some further investigation.
There was precious little information online (not a good sign) and my heart sank when I came across this:
Writers: Is The Epitome Foundation A $75,000 Scam? - The Snapping Point

Heart breaking story. This sort of scam will only destroy good writers. Any way best of luck @yahialababidi
I’m grateful for your compassion & trying to modify my expectations!
Oh damn, I was so happy for you, and now I’m terribly disappointed as well:-( They can make these things look SO real!
It will happen for you, I’m sure of it <3
Bless your big heart...
I’m still recovering from the shock & being contacted by other writers who have received a similar offer.
Asking myself, how to better shield our hearts against disappointment, by not trusting so blindly...
I think, very cynically, that you always have to believe it's NOT true at first, and then only 'check if maybe it is true anyway'. I have this mindset and it does help ;-) If it's too good to be true it probably isn't. But this scam you describe is nasty as it's so close to what you're working towards to - that makes it more believeable than a random 'you won the lottery!'...
You're right, of course. Sorry, just seeing this... Overcoming a flu and out-of-town house guest visiting. Meantime, I've managed to write a poem, to process this experience, and I hope to post it, here, soon.
Thanks, again, for your compassion & advice.
Sadly this kind of thing happens quite a lot these days. I hope it causes you no lasting harm. Feel better soon!
Thanks, for the support & uplift, my friend. Trying to extract a lesson from this & best I have, to date is: trust less readily, reduce expectations & work harder..
Shiiiiiiiiiit I was so happy!! That's so sad and looks terrible! What are you going to do with the credit and all the info they got from you? It sounds scary!
I appreciate your sympathy & concern. I reported them to the Federal Trade Commission & they are currently under investigation.
Also, filed for fraud/identity theft with DMV... what a mess.
I was reading this thinking, oh boy, he's about to get scammed, who is going to tell him.
Sorry some people stink. :)
Glad you saw through it.
You’re shrewder than I am... I need to wise up & do my due diligence.
Meantime, examining how this has deeply tampered with my feelings, I’m in the process of writing a poem about it.
Feelings are so inconvenient
Thats very sad. I am sorry, I know how it feels :(
Sorry you also had to go through this :(
