Deep brain stimulation effective treatment for Parkinson’s patients

The average spread of this disorder in India is as much as 2,394 patients per one lakhs population. This is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the world after Parkinson's Alzheimer's. Their health experts said that awareness on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is important for controlling the disease. This World Parkinson's Day is celebrated on 11th April to raise awareness about the reality of living with the disorder. Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Neurosurgery of Yeshwanthpur Dr. Raghu Ram Advisor said that this DBS involves pouring electrodes in one part of the brain which is called the eye nucleus.

This is a major non-communicative degenerative disorder which affects the current health system. This DBS helps to smooth this current flow. It also helps in reducing the side effects of medicines. This is due to deficiency of chemical substances in Parkinson's dopamine, and these changes in the electrical current in the brain. It is available as both Apo-morphine injection and infusion pumps, which relieves patients within a few minutes compared to other treatments taking longer than 30 minutes. A new successful treatment of 'Apo-morphine' was recently started by Vikram Hospital, Bangalore, with UK-based Britannia Pharmaceuticals, for the first time in patients in the mid-stage of Parkinson in the country.

Although most of the patients are over 50 years of age, no age group is immune to Parkinson's disease.
