Watchmen, The Boys and The Umbrella academy, Which One Should You Watch?
"Men Who End Up Hanging from Trees with Secret Compartments in Their Closets Tend to Think of Themselves as The Good Guys." - Laurie Blake, Watchmen.
HBO’s Watchmen, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and Prime’s The boys, the year 2019 was a year of superheroes. And among these three, to me, Watchmen was the best.
It's very visible now, the hardcore fighting behind the scenes among the streaming giants. I mean they all release similar contents around the same time. It doesn't matter if its Sci-fi, adventure or the 80’s drama. But in the race for supremacy, it's only profitable to the viewers don’t you think. I mean, they compete for the top spot and we get to see good content.
Let me sum up my experience watching the three shows. I'll start with the umbrella academy and finish with watchmen as the cherry on the top.
The umbrella academy:
Do you know the tale of seven deadly sins? Not the biblical one, he anime one. Now mix it with one-quarter of X-men, blend it well and you got yourself a superhero story on the umbrella academy. lol I'm just kidding. I liked the show pretty much up to the point where Ellen Page Was the anti-hero in all of this. I mean the visuals were good, unique from the usual shenanigans you get to see from superhero flicks, the story was great but the pacing of it all, ooh boy, so slow that a tortoise will win if this show was a hare.
Everything aside, it's not your everyday average superhero flick. The graphic novel was of the same name (as they all are) and it was highly entertaining. To know the plot in advance I read through it before watching the show. So all the little errors and misalignment were pretty annoying to me.
But overall it’s a better show than most of the others Netflix has produced till now. Like who watches luke cage or an iron fist? This was far better.
The Boys:
As I said, this show too like most of the other ones was adopted from a comic with the same name, the boys. It is sort of a satire of the popular traditional DC and Marvel comics to be exact. For example, the main antagonist of the show Homelander is superman/captain America all in one. He's the poster boy of the justice league of this universe which is called the seven. His ideologies are that of Captain America. But the whole team of them, the seven, is owned by a “Vought International”, a privet corporation making them a supercharged centralized corrupt theocracy.
Like if he doesn’t like someone, he just punches through them or burns them inside out with his heat vision. For example, His boss is a woman who just became a mom. While she is in office, she uses a breast pump to store the extra she produces. This sadistic mofo uses his x-ray vision to satisfy his fetish of seeing her topless. Though in the end, he's the one who kills her.
A must watch if you like superhero entertainment but aspire to see something unique.
Watchmen:
Now, this was a superhero show that blew my mind. Watchmen is known for its story building around the real-world problems from true history. All the other comics books do this up to a certain point, but not like this, not like watchmen. For example, Adrian Veidt AKA Ozymandias born with exceptional IQ levels. Deeming him the world's smartest man alive. As he gained experience from fighting super villains along with the watchmen, he realized one thing, which is true in reality, is stopping humankind from tearing each other faces off requires something that dulls their primordial habit of behaving like primates.
So he devised a master-plan. He took the strongest idol of humankind, Dr. Manhattan. And made him into everyone's common enemy. Everybody either wanted him dead or wanted to use his power. Interestingly enough, in this endeavor against him, the whole humankind was standing together.
That tells us something, doesn’t it? Like the concept of human peace and unity is so fragile. It's true in the times we are living now too. Like how due to COVID-19, we fight over toilet rolls. Now you're thinking, I'm not that guy. But the interesting thing is, we all are the same. Fight like animals to survive, while still wearing a 15 grand suit.
Now, if you’ve got the time to just relax and jump knee-deep in a puddle of entertainment, watch all of these three alongside. All of them. Do not discriminate please. It will be memorable for you for years to come.
And if you liked what you read, any feedback will be much obliged. So till next time ya beautiful idiots.
