Mary

As the newscaster reads out the devastating news out, her body went limp, mouth dry and blood boiling. Her hearing seized, tears invisible as if to say it has been evaporated by the insane temperature she was running. Her husband and only siblings have been killed in the war. Her hopes are gone, her breathe is seizing. She tried to faint but her horrors kept her awake.

Mary was born on a cold morning 1945 in one of the farm houses in small Heath, Birmingham to a poor family whose main occupation was farming. She and her three other siblings had to share small meals good deficient of nutrients but as long they were together they were happy. The family were happy just to have a meal twice a day, Mary worked hard with her mum on the farm during the day and worked with her dad in a small bar they own in the night. When pest invested their small farmland they struggled to get good grains thereby making such times worse than the others. Her childhood wasn't the perfect one any child would wish to have but she was taught contention right from an early age so she never complained. Being the first child and atleast six years older than her next sibling she was a part time parents of her own siblings especially when her parents went for business trips with the aim of improving the conditions of their family.

Her glooms and pain started during the great influenza. Her parents died. They were exposed to the disease on one of their trips, she had to quarantine her siblings from their parents since they were still young and were at risk of contacting the dreadful illness. She worked hard to afford food and drugs for her parents. She was lucky not to contact the disease as she was always in contact with her parents. Due to their old and fragile health they succumbed to the disease and were pronounced dead. They were a lot of death during that period from that illness, infact it was a global pandemic. She and her siblings grieved for a while but the main sadness came from the fear that one of her siblings will contact the disease, she did not really worry about herself because she had this funny thought that she could not catch the illness and it somehow worked for her.

After her parents death, she and siblings had to work for their survival, they worked to sustain their late parent's farm work. She became the sole manager at her late dad's bar, the men there admired her and mostly tipped her for her courage and discipline. One of the men that frequented the bar started admiring her without her notice, he was very intrigued by her beauty and most especially her commitment.

The man's name was Wilson Maguire, he worked in one the automobile industry that just started getting prominence in England. He worked with Bentley, he was a nice and admirable man that liked resting in Mary's bar. He used to patronize her dad when he was still alive. One day he decided to test Mary and also get to know her better. He made his friends carry him home that night after drinking to make it look like her was drunk. Unknown to her Wilson left his wallet by the corner of his chair on purpose.
When she came to clean later that night she thought that the man forgot her, inside the wallet she found forty seven pounds and some few pence. She knew that the wallet will belong to Wilson since he sat there that night and she saw him being dragged home after being drunk.
She kept the wallet and its content intact, her parents taught her honesty so it was an easy decision to make. She intended to return the wallet when next she saw him. Wilson didn't show up for at least a week. When he finally did she took the wallet to him and he thanked her and paid for his drinks and left.
Wilson told his friends about her they approved of her so he asked her out and after courting for a while they married. By this time her two siblings were old enough, she left the bar and farmland to them and move to Wilson's home but visited them when she could.

Life was good to her once again, her marriage was a happy one. Her husband supported her and she started selling fabrics from overseas. She was living well and happy. But just two and a half year of moving to Wilson house, the world war started. Her husband and two brothers were enrolled in the army and sent to the war front. One day of their enrollment she was sad and sick. She tried to stop them from going to war but they promised to return to her when the war was over. Every day of the war she was glued to her radio to try to know about the welfare of her love ones. She hardly ate during this times. She closed work earlier than usual and she was always lonely.

That Friday evening as the breeze blew on her curtains the news caster dropped the news that went down her spine. The battalion that her husband and siblings fought was defeated and all the soldiers were killed in an ambush. She sat on the floor and thought about how sad the world is.Her life was never the same, she sorrowed alot and was unable to be consoled. She wished the war never happened or she was never born. She questioned God why she had to pass through pain all her life.
