Can't you see us?
"Where are you? And where's Amy?"
"Here... Can't you see us?"
"Here, where?" And he turned around trying to locate the source of the voice, but there was really no one in the house. So he shouted one more time:
"Where are you Damian and where is Amy?" And this time there was no answer, but a shiver ran through her body and a chirp of distant birds warned her of a bad omen and her impression made her run away from her daughter's house.
Early in the morning, she received a call from Damian who was returning home after spending several weeks on a Caribbean cruise. He asked her to come to his home to create a welcoming atmosphere, to entertain Amy, who was having a birthday.
She was very excited that both of them had this detail with her, she didn't expect them to come back so soon, but Damian told her that Amy missed her very much and didn't want to celebrate her birthday without her.
It was the first time she thought she wouldn't celebrate her birthday, she had just gotten married and was on her honeymoon, so it was logical that she would celebrate it with him. But she was pleasantly surprised that they decided to return to celebrate it with her, as always, although it seemed a little strange.
That is not his fault. He even likes Yoga as I do. The three of us make up a dynamic trio, they almost took me on the cruise if it weren't for the fact that I'm terrified of the sea and because I felt a little discomfort in Damian's eyes. Although it was not just his look, he would definitely never have agreed to steal that intimacy necessary for the beginning of married life.
Damian had a certain aura of mystery flitting in his gaze, something ethereal that indicated he knew more than he was expressing. But, he conformed to our family movement without telling us much about his strange beliefs, life and death rituals inherited from his Celtic family clan.
One night, encouraged by the drinks, he almost revealed to us a Celtic ritual for returning after death. Seriously, he felt that he believed it was possible to return after crossing the threshold and even suggested that he had experienced death on more than one occasion and had returned. But when he saw the look of wonder that Amy and I crossed, he joked and changed the subject.
She had that dream again last night. If it wasn't for today's arrival and that she knew they were okay, I'd say there was a premonition locked in.
Ever since they embarked on that cruise, a small thorn stuck in her heart, the fear of losing her only daughter, but she attributed it to the fact that Amy would begin a new phase of life in which she, as a mother, would naturally take a back seat.
On closer inspection, however, it was Damian's insinuation that she had visited the realm of death and returned that sowed in her psyche the possibility of losing her along with him, manifesting itself in dreams that seem more like nightmares.
The phone rang and it was Damian who warned her that they were at home, that she should go with them.
"What do you mean they're home? It's still hours away from your arrival. And the surprise for Amy? There are still some details missing." But, on the other side of the line, there was no one there anymore.
She quickly went to the old house the newlyweds had rented and when she arrived at the entrance she couldn't help but look up at the sky to see the origin of the sound of a flock of birds, but she didn't see any. She entered and everything was as she had left it a few hours earlier and, frightened, she asked:
"Where are you? And where is Amy?"
"Here... Can't you see us?"
"Here, where?" And she turned around trying to locate the source of the voice, but there was really no one in the house.
