Getting a decent photo with limited equipment

There's something to be said about getting a decent image with little to no equipment. Yes, an SLR with a good lens is important, but you have to take care of lighting, proper camera settings, and making sure you're still (and preferably your subject as well).

When shooting at home, I sometimes like to get creative with my GF. We don't have professional lights, I usually can't find my tripod, and it's really hard to get creative when you're not feeling already in that state of mind. However, it's always worth trying if you put in a little effort. The results might surprise you.

Artificial light was provided by small TV in our living room. Backdrop was from one of her artworks (which served de-clutter the background), hung backwards on a wall. Beads came with a sticky backing and can be found cheaply at art/craft supply stores. To apply the beads, asking one of your GF's friends to help can save some time and makes for a lot of jokes. Use chair, desk, etc. as a tripod if you can't find yours either, especially in low light.
